Hey guys.

I am going for holiday to Malaysia in a few weeks time, and was considering purchasing the new PS3 Slim from there.

I'd just like to know if there are any issues I need to be aware of when buying the PS3 Slim from there, and what advice you guys can give me (except from XBox fanboi's wanting to start a flame war - I've already decided I'm going PS3).

Some questions I have:

  1. Do I need to worry about PAL/NTSC and other compatibility issues? What does PAL/NTSC actually mean, for both games, DVDs movies, and Blu-ray movies?
  2. Do I need to worry about country/region locking or zoning issues? Will I be able to change the zone, even if it is just once? Does Blu-ray have the same zoning policy like DVD, or is it zone-free?
  3. Do I need to worry about HDMI compatibility? I want to connect the PS3 Slim to my locally purchased Samsung HD-ready LCD TV. I'm guessing that there shouldn't be an issue as HDMI is an international standard.
  4. Is the warranty covered internationally, or will I lose out as soon as I bring it to South Africa. Is it really that big a deal if I lose out on the warranty? What other options do I have in terms of warranty / repairs?

Any advice / suggestions will be highly appreciated. Please feel free to let me know of any other issues to consider, ones I might have completely missed.

Thanks.

Keep in mind that there will be some damage at customs, unless you sneak past them. So take into account the price you pay in Malaysia vs the price locally. Personally I prefer to buy local, burnt my fingers once and not again.

Could you be more specific, of how you got burnt?

Some questions I have:

  1. Do I need to worry about PAL/NTSC and other compatibility issues? What does PAL/NTSC actually mean, for both games, DVDs movies, and Blu-ray movies? PAL is the region code for Europe/South Africa. NTSC is America, Japan etc. Games that are from a different redion to your PS3 will work perfectly as game are not region locked.
  2. Do I need to worry about country/region locking or zoning issues? Will I be able to change the zone, even if it is just once? Does Blu-ray have the same zoning policy like DVD, or is it zone-free? Blu-ray is region locked (like DVD) so if you buy your PS3 in Malaysia, you wont be able to play Blu-rays on it that were bought here.
  3. Do I need to worry about HDMI compatibility? I want to connect the PS3 Slim to my locally purchased Samsung HD-ready LCD TV. I'm guessing that there shouldn't be an issue as HDMI is an international standard. Nothing to worry about
  4. Is the warranty covered internationally, or will I lose out as soon as I bring it to South Africa. Is it really that big a deal if I lose out on the warranty? What other options do I have in terms of warranty / repairs? Not actually sure about this, maybe someone else could answer this

Any advice / suggestions will be highly appreciated. Please feel free to let me know of any other issues to consider, ones I might have completely missed. Buy Uncharted 2 when its out :)

Thanks.

:)

Got my slim at Musica on Saturday evening. They have a bundle going for R3999 where you get the slim plus Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell Double Agent. Not the most hectic or current games, but for R200, it's worth it (you can get the console on its own for 3799).

And they also have a 250GB bundle that they say will be available mid October. Can't remember the details: will post them if I remember when I get home

Ive been to KL & Bangkok and PS3 prices are relatively similar to our's, yes when it was launched it was less than half to what we were paying but there will be some issues with Blu Ray comaptibilty with regards to NTSC/PAL they are on the same region as us so thats fine. HDMI is a gloabal standard, my only concern for you is getting it through customs, those guys are mental at times, my cousins got caught with camera's THANK GOD they didnt find my 25 grand laptop I bought, lol

no that is not true,

Regions for the Blu-ray standard:
A: The Americas, and their dependencies, East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia.
B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia), Oceania, and their dependencies.
C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, central Eurasia (including Russia), and their dependencies.

A lof of movies are region free, so you will find that you can almost buy any blu ray movie and watch it.

I read the Wikipedia article. It states that most movies are released region free. That is good. And I believe that all PS3 games are region free as well.

This makes the pruchase of the PS3 from Malaysia even more compelling for me, but only if the price is a lot better.

Do you know if the DVD-playing hardware/software in the PS3 also has region locking, or if so, can your region be changed, like with certain DVD players and computer drives.

DVD's are region locked. So you will not be able to play DVD's from South Africa on a PS3 from Malaysia. I know because I got a PS3 from China and cannot play current DVD's. But in those cases, I just stream it to my PS3 via my PC.

I think you will be able to claim the Tax/Vat amount at customs so might be cheaper.
Warranty imho wont be a problem, just ask the PS3 owners what problems did they encounter in the first year or 2, and about DVD regions, cant it be chipped to all regions?

I'm in Malaysia at the moment. The PS3 Slim has not yet been released here...

On the plus side, I bought the new generation
iPod Nano for MYR 719. That's aboout R1600. :D

UPDATE: I did not purchase the PS3 Slim from Malaysia, as it was not yet available when I was there, even on my last day there. I am purchasing it locally from Kalahari.net. Purchasing locally also means I don't have to worry about compatibility issues, region locking issues, and warranty issues.
