In a new “no nonsense” approach to traffic violations, Western Cape traffic officials will crack down on motorists who drive cars without number plates. Up until now these violations were only punished with a warning or a fine.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said yon Sunday that any car on the road without number plates, either on the front, rear or both ends of the vehicle, would be “immediately discontinued”.

That would mean the car’s licence disc would be confiscated and the owner would be forced to complete a scheduled roadworthy test at one of the department’s centres before the car could be legally driven again.

Furthermore, motorists found violating traffic laws, such as speeding, while driving in a car without plates would be arrested on the spot.

This follows news that more than 2200 drivers were fined for speeding in the Western Cape this weekend.

According to Africa, the highest speed recorded was a that of a driver caught driving aon the N1 at 179km/h in a 120km/h zone.

But for every driver who was fined, Africa said, countless others escaped the consequences of reckless driving by removing their plates.

This also complicated hit and runs, as many drivers were untraceable because their cars had no plates.

about time... but this should be happening nationally.
It should be being enforced anyway.
I'm flabbergasted at the number of cars I see every day without plates, and I know how often I get stopped at road blocks.

Wait until the day your number plate falls off, it happened to me once before. When I stopped to go shopping at spar I got a nice fat fine, the plate was there when I got into the car. Sometimes things like this happen but yes I know there are plenty of people deliberately driving around without plates.
 
Weird, I hardly ever see cars without plates. Didn't know it was such an issue.

Good on them though, they must just enforce it.
 
its always been the law that you need to properly display your licence plates just as it is the law to have proper functioning tires and lights. If your headlight is out the cops should warn you and if you fail to repair it fine you. Similarly they have had discretion on licence plates a bit of a tightening up is one thing but undoing basic courtesy discretion is asking for ****.

The Western Cape has a nanny state mentality and a belief in draconian measures - even when they are wrong on the law - and this is going to translate into encouraging thuggery from law enforcement (remember the musician from a few months ago) and yes in civilization if your car is vandalized or plates fall off the cops will are likely to come to your assistance and caution you to get the damn things fixed in the Western Cape expect to fund the system with a hefty fine.

How does your number plate fall off if it's riveted to the body?

Aren't they supposed to be pop-riveted on?

My fear is that this would only bring on even more corruption in Joburg :|

Only newer vehicles have their plates riveted.

I had my front plate fall off in PMB. Fortunately I was able to figure out where it happened and back tracked to find it.

I put the plate on my front windscreen and headed up the N3 toward home. I figured I would wait until home to fix it properly.

I was stopped outside Harrismith in a road block on the N3 and only through tons of pleading and negotiating would they let me go.
 
Time to install that little device that can drop and raise the plates at will. Or maybe just get a fake pair of plates.
 
I don't have a plate on the front of my car (Alfa) because it looks terrible (vain I know) but I keep the plate on my back seat. The actual plate is too big for the front of my car anyway. This is going to be a proper PITA.

Ah, I was under the impression all number plates had to be riveted. Well I guess falling plates can be an issue then.

Wait what? Correct me if I'm wrong but you're basically saying F the law because the plate doesn't look nice in the front?

Traffic police can see if you are bs'ing by the dead insects where the plate needs to be.

No, its not a PITA..

Put the bloody plate back where it legally belongs. We are all required to have license plates front and back. Just because you think it looks terrible is just wrong on every level, plus of course I can almost be sure your other motivation is to avoid the speeding fines and such that you probably should regularly get.
