Its going to look hideous on the front to the one side, but that's the law mate.
Because up here the bribes are too lucrative for officials. Ironically the eToll system has a requirement that marshals pull off any vehicles using the eToll roads without number plates.
I'm willing to bet that 50-75% of the motorists without number plates in Cpt have lived/from Jhb in the last 2-5 years. Why?? No offence but Jhb people i've noticed have this attitude that its their right to do as they damn well please irrespective of the law. Proof? Ask anyone of the drivers in Jhb without number plates why.. they will complain about the system etc but will refute that they doing is illegal.. its seen as a justified action haha.. <-- I say give them HUGE fines.
Sure it might be stolen, u can plead your case.. but when you fined multiple different times then ...

i can't put a license plate on the front of my car - whole bottom grill is destroyed and the license plate keeps falling off

I see them daily here flying down the emergency lane - cutting in at the front of queues, turning in from a straight lane, etc, etc.
They always go for the "soft" targets when pushing laws.

I like this. Some of the worst road users I have ever seen took plates off to do what they did. On the other hand I had my front plate fall off while on holiday this year. While in the Golden gate park I drove through some water that I think tore it off. The average number plate holder is thin crappy plastic held on by two screws. Hence I think the harsh fine's should be for both plates removed. If you have at least one then just a fine.

You should have told the dealer to sort you out with a plate that fit...
If a dealer just gave me a license plate for a vehicle I had bought and said "Oh it doesn't fit".. I'd look at him, and tell him to sort it out and give me a call when its properly sorted.

There is a special "backing" plate that fits on the front bumper of the MiTo or Giulietta, and you can get it from your nearest friendly Alfa Dealer 
It takes the shape of the bumper, and gives you space to screw on a normal long plate without bending it from here to kingdom come.
It is supposed to come with all SA spec cars, and if it's not on, then the original PDI was done by a lazy moegoe.
If you get a fine in the mean time, send the bill to the cretin who sold you the car. It is actually illegal to deliver a car that way.

@Guantanamo - Please ask the dealer you bought the car from how they managed to get it though roadworthy without a front plate?
To all those bitching about this crackdown - I hope this is a taste of things to come. It has gotten to a stage on our roads where the lack of traffic enforcement has resulted in absolute chaos. I remember a time where you were fined heavily for your car not being roadworthy, which included:
Not being insured, 3rd-Party insurance mandatory
Exhaust smoke
Missing reflectors
Excessive steering wheel play

I've seen some cars with motorbike plates on them. We have the 'normal' European sized plates, but there is also a slightly shorter one available, which I have on my car.

There are only two legal sizes - Standard and Premium - i.e. a normal old plate and a long one. If you try and cut one down to size similar to the front bumper of an Alfa or Astina, it is illegal in SA.
The only other "size" that is legal is the square one that fits on the back of some cars and bikes.

Simplest would be to have road blocks where there is a mobile vendor ready to make number plates on the scene. No plate gets you pulled over and you may buy one that gets riveted to your car or bike. And then you may head on your merry way. Don't have the funds - call a friend or walk.

I know you got this from Wiki, but there's a mistake on the size, they should either both be 110 x L or 120 x L - width should be the same on both plates.
I like this law, let's hope they can implement it properly.

Easy to tell if you talking BS - where the numberplate used to be, if it is clean, then your story is probably true. If it's dirty and has bird **** on it, clearly it has been off for a while. Just point that out to the officer who pulls you over.
Secondly as stated - new cars and cars which have been into a panel beater of late would have had their plates pop-rivirted on. So this falling off business is nonsense.

Now I'm doubting myself. I was one of the original contributors to the Wiki article, and now I am not sure wheteher the width is the same - time to grab a ruler and run outside!
