Q: Does Ockie Like Furries?

Furries.... is it an adult thing ? Gay thing ? Can't figure out why grown up people would want to wear an animal costume ?

The dude... or whatever his gender is, wants to be a dog. There's actually a phrase called "Species dysphoria" fml.

In a 2008 study by Gerbasi et al., amongst other things pursuing the potential of a condition termed "Species Identity Disorder", 46% of people surveyed who identified as being in the furry fandom, answered "yes" to the question "Do you consider yourself to be less than 100% human?" and 41% answered "yes" to the question "If you could become 0% human, would you?"

It is an adult thing yes. Most of those who are into it are gay yes but that's not a qualifier of what a furry makes.
I guess gay people are more sensitive or attuned to the arts and this is true for theatre and television.

I wear the costume because its my creation and I am bringing it to life by doing so. Furry also offers one the way to express oneself in a way that is different. For me its a way to express my more playful and silly side.

On the subject of those who believe they are an animal. I do not subscribe to that belief. I am a human being 100% and I work, and contribute to society like every one else does.

Furries are difficult to explain simply because the fanbase are fans of content which is mostly created in the fandom. Unlike Star trek or anime fans which has media content that is mass produced outside of these communities and easy to point too. Furries can point to Disney or whatnot but that doesn't really capture the concept entirely and the community is horrible at explaining this ending in a answer that sounds like: Furries are fans of furries. A brief description would be at least to say: Furries are fans of cartoon animals. Most people get the picture like that and it is actually a good summary for myself and most others.

Is it an adult thing.

Not really but most people inside are young adults hence the sheer amount of erotic material. You can make it a adult thing which many has done.

Also no It just attracts bisexual and homosexuals more than other fandoms I guess. Furries tend to be very bisexual with a low 28% of the fandom being exclusively heterosexual but also only 20% being exclusively homosexual. Citation.

Why?

Out of the numbers only a small amount actually do the costume thing. Most people are just a internet persona. For the ones who do the fursuits it's nearly always in a attempt to be a entertainer of some sort, either at a event designed for it or when a camera of some sorts are rolling.
 
Note to self:

Step 1 - get a fursuit.
Step 2 - find out where Ockie lives
Step 3 - ...
Step 4 - ...
Step 5 - cuddles?

Thanks for those. I still don't get it ( or know if I even really want to ), but I feel like I might at least have a slight inkling now.

It's a sort of performance art, like cross dressing (or whatever the correct verb for being a drag queen is)? Role playing?

Pretty much yes... its cosplay with a difference. If you are fortunate to attend an overseas furcon you'll see a lot of it centers around people parading in their fursuits on stage

The costuming "fursuiting" can be labelled as cosplaying except the cosplayer created the character.

The furries are really just cartoon animal fans.

Here's how I got into it (You can read the magazine next month for the full story and give me feedback later)
I got in via my hobby of being a collector of Sonic The Hedgehog merchandise, being a great player of the games and an all-round fanatic of the franchise.
I began to interact with the Sonic fandom overseas around the end of 1999, all done via 33k dialup :crying:
Within three months I knew what a furry was.. and by 2001 I was fully familiar with furry art. I saw the start up of DeviantArt, I've seen the meteoric rise of anthropomorphic fan art and therefore I've been a furry for nearly 20 years. I kept it hidden mostly because of how South Africans are with this sort of thing- very judgemental etc.

Yes there is.. because even from the 70s, artists have drawn anthropomorphic females in a sexually suggestive way. This now means that its accepted in the fandom to draw and produce artwork covering every vanilla sexual act, and of course every fantasy, including the stuff from 50 shades. People producing this kind of artwork are in high demand, to the extent that the really good ones are able to make a comfortable living off their art. I have tested this myself and by god it works.

So you have furries that, in addition to regular pr0n, enjoy seeing anthro cartoony animals getting their freak on.
Then you have the very small minority, I'd say around 3% that take this a step too far, and spend as much as R20k on a suit that has all the facilities to allow them to have sex like animals do. Most of us, myself included feel very disgusted by this, and these people are quite openly shunned or avoided. I do not have any desire or inclination to even attempt this. I prefer to bone humans.

Now as a straight male I can assure you, there is art out there, of anthropomorphic females that is so damn good that it doesn't matter how hard you try and rationalise it, you will fly at full mast.

Also bear in mind that many furries suffer with ADHD or Aspergers and I can assure you, that as a sufferer myself, tactile sensory integration has been a huge problem for me. So for some very rare furries it is that bad that they need to touch fur, and I don't know, possibly while making love. The problem is they should keep it private, but alas, they have to broadacast to the world their prowess in bed, with a fursuit on at that. Cringe of the highest order.

Now none of this is much of a surprise to me.. having seen it all in the anime fandom, and the Sonic fandom is equally deviant..

As for art...
Sadly work keeps me busy and I tend to keep a positive spin on the fandom so I use what time I have to produce furry media for general consumption (and to allow outsiders to see a more positive picture) and my Sonic comics.
I adore drawing these guys, I cannot explain why, it just is. I also love drawing bunnies but ja.. when I have my new studio, we will see:

Cool. I get porno fanart and hentai, so my only disconnect is sexualizing anthropomorphic characters ( I don't really get sexualizing really cartoonish characters like the Simpsons either), but that's me. So ja, guess you lot aren't particular weird. It seems like harmless, geeky fun for the most part.
