Hi guys I was a bit worried about heat issues today as pc refused to do POST so I changed heatsink and stock cooler for my heatsink/stock cooler of my dual core - both fans look/fit the same (so I hope thats fine). Anyhow to cut a long story short it wasnt the heatsink but rather when I plugged in another hdd that the reset/power switch cables got caught in the rotating hdd bay and bent the pins - didnt notice this till i took the whole mboard out etc.

So guess what im trying to say is im nervous about temps - what should i be recieving with a stock cooler - would I have to change back to my other heatsink etc as thats a mission and it seems to be running the same temps, can q6600 users with stock cooling please post cpu temp and say how many/what fans they have in their chassis.

Thanks
J

Pics of Everest/Speedfan/SIW at full cpu/memory usage - 100% - im worrying now - case has 3x 80mms + 2 x 120mm in it. Please advise - stock cooling on cpu / gpu.

Thanks
J

according to siw if you check the jpg it was doing 70 odd at full load which i cant believe - im more inclined to believe the 60degrees from speedfan as speedfan shows an idle core temp of 40 .

J

Use Coretemp to get your temperatures.

http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

my four cores idle at around 48, tho it would prob be 42 if I didn't have a 8800GTX cookin' up my rig :D Max I've seen mine go is about 58..

Remove the heatsink, clean your CPU too, get some Arctic Silver 5 and reseat the heatsink carefully and you should be set.

Everything is clean - its a brand new machine , no dust etc clogging it up , its q6600 p35-ds3l gbyte board, 8400gs gbyte, 4gb ddr2 800 raidmax aztec chassis - going to try the paste thing how much would good thermal paste drop temps by?

Edit: Just ran SIW/Speedfan/Core Temp/HwMonitor - screenie to follow - thing that worries me is even under full load fan is only hitting 900-1000 rpm - is there a setting i need to change in bios somewhere?

http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=3015&cat=500 - SIW + HWMonitor + Speedfan + Core Temp at max load 100% strain

Thanks
J

edit: http://www.prophecy.co.za/-c-1_5.html - cant find the specific Artic Silver 5 mentioned - any local suppliers in CPT - cost ? worth it getting a Zalman cooler too?

Thanks

Thing worrying me is I've tried 2 stock coolers - they dont really go much past 1k rpm - should I not be seeing 3k rpm or some such - seems rather rather slow - is there not a setting in the bios or something ive missed?

Thanks
J

yea check the mobo is not limiting the fan speed

even so i still think those temps are way to high for it to be the same

you sure u got good thermal paste and that the heatsink is click in correctly?

Good thermal paste no - its stock , as for being mounted correctly , yes ive tried two different stock heatsinks and its still that bloody high - only thing i can see wrong is neither fan will do more than 1000 rpm which is really slow , i reckon it should be doing 3000-6000 rpm as oppposed to the measly 1000, will scour mboard book and see if theres not a limitation somewhere.

Make sure the heat sink is fasten correctly, those temps is too high. 1000rpm is okay for idle but it should speed up which is not happening if it's get too hot

Is your bios up to date? I had to update my bios to get my temps accurate.

Which revision is the cpu, b3 or g0 because my b3 revision is 70+ degrees under load with stock fan. The G0 revision will be or should be much cooler.

The g0 can also handle higher temps without falling over. You might have a concave heatspreader on it which would suck.
Get yourself a thermalrite ultima 90 or 120 thats pretty much as good as it gets on air.

My ex Q6600 used to be high 30's low 40's idle (B3 oced to 3) and in the 60's under load with a thermalright 120

F8b 2008/01/08

1. beta BIOS
2. update CPU ID (support Intel Yorkfield Q9xxx series CPU)

Right so I updated to the latest bios for my board F8b - gbyte p35-ds3l - wonder if this will stop audio issues i've been having - can only hope...

Anyhow i've also been monitoring cpu and temp doesnt seem to be coming down - my cpu as you know is q6600 - CPUID 0x6F7 , APICID 0, Revision B3, Kentsfield - so that a good or bad batch? I am really worried about the heat here will get some thermal paste next week some decent stuff and apply and see what happens - worried that the damn stock fan doesnt do much over 1k rpm and I cant seem to find a setting to manually up speed.....

J

Edit found a settings in bios that disables automatic fan speed and makes it always turn at max - so i enabled that - now fan is doing 1.9-2k rpm - according to systemfan cores running at 35-40 odd idle , according to siw - all running at 47-55 thats on idle - hwmonitor has em pegged at 40-48 on idle - So as far as i can see im hitting 40-50 idle depending on whats accurate and about 70 under load as scooby I think said.
