I have a Q6700 on the Gigabyte G31 mobo but it only runs at 1600 mhz. Can anyone help? All setting s in the bios are standard. Looks like speedstep is getting in the way and I'd like to disable it.

I run BOINC all the time so CPU is at 100% and temps are at 59 degrees.

SpeedStep will disable itself once the CPU starts getting heavy load, so it should be running at full speed once it's at 100% load. If it's still bothering you, you should be able to disable SpeedStep in the BIOS (though I'm not sure at which page, they seem to be shifting that option between different pages :p).

Hmmm, very weird then. Running 100% util and it's only at 1600. Maybe I should take the HSF off and redo the thermal paste and check again.

There's some option in the Advanced Bios tab that should fix that, I had the same issue. It's some acronym I think. Take a quick squiz through your bios, it's got something to do with limiting the something something. And it's not SpeedStep AFAIK...

disable C1E in the bios, is probably what Elev8r is talking about.

Right, I disabled C1E and advanced speedstep. Still no luck. I pushed the FSB up to 300 with a x10 multiplier and everytime I restart the PC with whatever multiplier it defaults back to x6. This is really frustrating. I've tried 266x10 which is standard and it still goes back to x6.

Wonder if the CPU is duffed?

I used to have an E6400 and it's multiplier also got stuck at 6x, but I remember turning something off in the bios and that fixed it permanently. When I rebuild my computer today, I'll go through the bios to see what option needs to be disabled, but I really don't think you processor is broken.

Thank you man who goes up and down;)

The part that confuses me is that I have a bunch of Q6600's and Q9300's and not one is experiencing this, it's just the Q6700 which I only have 1 of.

I had a similar problem- My multiplyer should default to a previous overclock.
What was happening was the bios reverting to a previous bios.

Hmmm, could be. I'll clear it tonight when I get home and set it to default and see if that changes anything.

Haven't had a chance to check my bios yet, but have you gone into M.I.T. (Motherboard Intelligent Tweaker) or something like that and looked at your multiplier? I just installed a Q6600 into my board and it's clock speed was 2.13GHz because the multi was set to 8 instead of the default 9...

EDIT: Nevermind, I read your previous posts ;)

Yea, it sounds fishy, almost like the m/b is not recognising the CPU properly. I would flash it with a different bios version, even an older version. I know that all the versions from F2 support the Q6700.

Been through that as well. I'm on F8 currently.

Ok, went through my bios and here's what I found;

Limit CPUID Max to 3 = Disabled
CPU Intelligent Something Something (C1E) = Disabled, but you've already done that so...
CPU Thermal Monitor (TM2) = Disabled
CPU EIST Function = Disabled

All of those things you should find in the Advanced Bios Settings Tab. Good luck :p
