Quadcopter/Drone Thread

So I have started looking at the Dji Mini SE (Fly More combo) would this be a good starter drone? I am a bit confused, will I need a license to operate it at say the beach on the South coast?

Get the mini 2. It’s a huge upgrade for little money.
Private use with no commercial interest does not require a licence but adherence to the RPAS rules

I got the mini 2 this week, the phantom 4 was just too much to carry around, the mini 2 is amazing ( will be selling the phantom 4 if anyone is interested )

It’s tiny, but does what the phantom 4 does

Nice - I was looking at the mini 2 but my Air still flies well and I needed a new laptop - I'll have to wait until mid 2022 now.

Cool thanks for the reply, my worry is the 10km radius around airports rule as my house is within 10km of the old Durban airport. So even though I want a drone I cant seem to find anywhere nearby that I could actually fly a drone. According to this website https://drones.org.za/drone-map/.

Which is weird because apparently lots of fishermen are using bait drones close to virginia airport.

I don't want to spend R10k+ and then get hit with a R5000 to R500000 fine

How much enforcement of those laws actually take place, considering how gutless our law enforcement agencies are?

Who ever reports you, needs to have solid evidence it’s your drone

I have no idea but I have read at least one post in this thread (or maybe just this forum) where someone got a R5000 fine for flying in his neighborhood. No idea how it is enforced.

My cousin is living in china and there it seems to be pretty simple, wherever his Dji Mavic Air will take off is fine, if it recognizes that it is in a no fly zone it just doesn't take off. Wish it was as simple locally

I have flown around a golf course in my home town , within a local airfields area, but if you don’t go mucking around above 100m you should be fine, general aviation has a minimum height of 500ft above ground level to maintain , and always , ALWAYS keep line of sight

Wonder who enforced that fine? If it was the CAA or
the cpfff ( parktjie policie)

As for the no fly zone, you have the option in app to over ride it

Hi all has anyone here had any issues with the CAA? i was reported to the CAA for fling my mavic min in my front yard and have now just revived a fine for the amount of R10 000 . i think this is ridiculous for a first offence

That's like taking the proverbial sht on your doorstep.

Flying safely and away from home, while standing in a location that's hidden from general view, it will be really difficult for anyone to even know where the pilot is located, nevermind positively ID them to report them.

Fair enough dude

Flying in your yard is not illegal, not unless he went above 40ft , flew at night, or basically annoyed his whiny neighbours

Or lives next door to OR Thambo airport
Wouldn't you technically still be breaking the rules around flying over people if you crossed your boundary line?

Technically yeah, but I’ve spoke to my neighbours, they don’t have an issue, I go over 3 properties and I’m over a golf course , no one really cares about the drone there (:
