Quest for the best value SUV

Last edited:
Ok so I began my search for a decent family SUV this weekend and so far this is what I have looked at. . .

First off drove the 3.0D4D 2x4 Fortuner. . . nice car, all the bells and whistles BUT whilst sitting in the car I realised that I would have to be an absolute idiot to buy a car that is so hot with criminals and I refuse to put my family in danger.

So as nice as the fortuner was, I will look for something a little less hijackable.

Next stop was Ford where I really didn't expect to find anything amazing, but was pleasantly surprised by the Ecosport as well as the Kuga. The top of the line Kuga is really nice but at R400 000 + it is a bit nuts. The 1 litre turbo Ecosport is very impressive and is only R249 000 for the top line model, leather auto etc.

Next I was thinking of looking at the Q3, really love Audi so I am sure it is as nice I expect it to be. Also quite like the Mazda CX5.

I will also look at the Forester. What else should I consider? Budget is about R350 000.

I can't help but to think that if you were to be in criminals sights that you would be hijacked be it in a Fortuna, Audi Q3, Forester or a flipping golf.

To not buy a fortuner because you consider yourself an absolute idiot for possibly putting your family in danger seems hilarious. Any vehicle is easily hijackable depending on where you drive and stop.

Some vehicles are higher up on the "wanted list" of criminals in this country. Things like the Fortuner and most Golfs are high target vehicles, so it's perfectly logical reason for avoiding a specific vehicle.

^this
The fortuner is very well known for being a serious hijacking/theft risk.
Most VW's are high risk and insurance is higher on them too for that reason.

The Fortuner's engine fits nicely into a taxi...

Yes. Hilux and Fortuners are exceptionally well selling vehicles. (http://www.iol.co.za/motoring/industry-news/sa-s-50-top-selling-vehicles-june-1.1540587#.UhHv1NKNl3o)

So it would only be logical that more of them get stolen if they are very common on the road as compared to vehicles that sells in fractions in comparison with Hilux's and Tuna's.

I wish the XV was slightly cheaper that's such a nice car !!
The entry level XV 2.0 manual is now R 299 000 and there is a fancy finance deal on it as well.

OT but do you know if there are any of the old school fire breathing ones coming out?
Thinking back to the 22B and legacy B4 Blitzen.
We still make fire breathers - WRX, STI and Legacy GT are still available - they all have the 2.5 Turbo. The new 8 speed Forester XT is no slouch. :)

Do yourself a favour and pop in to a Toyota agent and ask any salesperson to show you the lengths to which they have had to go to try and slow down the hijack brigade. And STILL they get swiped. There are many SUV's out there that have nothing like the Toyota risk attached to them.

Yes it would be logical to think that, but having worked for Toyota and seen the agony that the guys go through because of theft, it is also a well known fact that the ratio of stolen Tunas, relating to the number sold, is still the highest in the country - whatever way you try and spin it, the Toyota is a riskier vehicle than others in sunny South Africa.

Hmm I am pretty sure that is what I said. Its one of the best selling vehicles (probably the best selling SUV) will be one the most stolen vehicles due to the sheer number of them on the road.

Just to make a simple analogy. If 14 inch mags are the most commonly sold mags then it would be little surprise if the most stolen mags are 14 inch.

PS. I am not a salesperson of any brand of motor vehicles. I am only stating my experience and I am not trying to spin a story. I am merely stating my opinion (albeit biased) that I have had my hilux for over 2 and half years now (without any issues) and I will gladly risk getting a fortuner.

You are not getting it, are you? The RATIO is still higher than other vehicles. They take them for the engines, which fits nicely in taxi's...

Jeremy Clarkson seems to like the CX5 and according to him, is the best caravan towing SUV out there (or is it second to that kark VW Tiguan).
My vote also for a Honda CRV of course.
Jeremy said it was the best better than the Tiguan but he reviewed the 2.2 Diesel Skyactiv. Can you believe STUPID mazda didn't bring it to SA!!!!!! Arrrgh wtf they have a 2l petrol Skyactiv only! stupid stupid stupid

I saw a documentary not so long ago might have been Carte Blanche about the number of 4x4 and especially fortuners that are stolen and driven over the border in to Mozambique and other countries.

You are the one debating, you should supply the link... We know the answer.

No, I am not claiming I know the 'answer' with ratios relating to number of Toyota's sold vs. other vehicles and the number of the said sold vehicles relating to the number of thefts of those vehicles. So I have not need to provide evidence for claims not made by me.

What I am saying is that I'll gladly take the risk and get a fortuner.

Are you kidding me? You brought up ratios in the first place...

That is very interesting indeed, and actually very sad to see the lengths guys go to, in order to stop their Fortuners being stolen....and STILL they swipe them!! I doubt there is any thread in any part of the world today that can go on for over 2 years discussing the theft of one make of vehicle!

Vanhimself, you are welcome to try your luck - you neverknow, you might be the one in a million buyer who doesn't get targeted! :D

No kidding. See above. Fazda made that claim.
I simply made the logical assumption that whichever car is the best selling (most common on the road) will inevitably become the most stolen vehicle.

As I have stated before, based on where I reside and where I travel to I will gladly upgrade my hilux (which I have had for over 2 years without any issues) to a fortuner. :D

You are basically saying all but one in a million Fortuner owners get targeted.
