Quest for the best value SUV

No kidding. See above. Fazda made that claim.
I simply made the logical assumption that whichever car is the best selling (most common on the road) will inevitably become the most stolen vehicle.

Insinuating that the ratio stays the same... but it does not. The ratio is VERY high on the Fortuners. Your reasoning skills are something else...

Which is an assumption you make because Fortuner's are commonly stolen?

I was simply trying to better understand how much higher the risk is buying a fortuner, in relation to other vehicles, and if it could be quantified. Instead of just simply assuming a high sell : theft ratio because we always hear about the Fortuner's getting stolen?

But I don't want to further derail the thread and I have already stated my opinion. :D

I could also say your reasoning skills are something else, but that would hardly contribute to the matter. :p

As you were.

Hmm I am pretty sure that is what I said. Its one of the best selling vehicles (probably the best selling SUV) will be one the most stolen vehicles due to the sheer number of them on the road.

Just to make a simple analogy. If 14 inch mags are the most commonly sold mags then it would be little surprise if the most stolen mags are 14 inch.

PS. I am not a salesperson of any brand of motor vehicles. I am only stating my experience and I am not trying to spin a story. I am merely stating my opinion (albeit biased) that I have had my hilux for over 2 and half years now (without any issues) and I will gladly risk getting a fortuner.

That's a bad example. The car that sell the most, is at risk of being jacked or stolen, because of demand in parts. Also, Fortuners engine isn't unique to itself, it share a lot of parts with Prado, Hilux etc. So a Chop shop will be burdened more with parts request for a car that is more common on the road than say a Alfa spider. VW Polo is also high on demand by Hi jackers etc, because it is sold more, not because it's a great cab.

If you go the Forester route, make sure you sell it before the warranty/service plan runs out. Nobody wants an old Forester.

So you call this "simply trying to better understand"?

To not buy a fortuner because you consider yourself an absolute idiot for possibly putting your family in danger seems hilarious. Any vehicle is easily hijackable depending on where you drive and stop.

Options to consider

I don't know much about SUVs but thought I'd hammer out a list to consider. Also check out youtube reviews by 'Carbuyer'.

Your segment
> Honda CRV *** (This is a global best seller for the segment)
> Subaru Forrester *** (have heard it's not that comfy in an urban setting, not sure what your primary use case is).
> VW Tiguan ***
> Hyunda ix35/ Kia Sportage **
> Ford Kuga **
> Mitsubishi Outlander (no one has mentioned this, it is popular in other markets abroad, maybe worth a look)
> Mazda CX5
> Nissan X-trail

Smaller Options
> Ford Ecoboost (based on the Fiesta platform, European designed but previous gen was primarily addressed to the BRICs grouping)
> Mitsubishi AWD?
> Nissan Qashqhai
> Nissan Juke (butt ugly)

Higher segment
> Volvo XC60 *** (very safe, with the auto braking (emergency brake assist) feature on average is involved in 20% less accidents than others in the class)
> Audi Q3 ****
> Ranger Rover Evoque ****

Ok so I began my search for a decent family SUV this weekend and so far this is what I have looked at. . .

First off drove the 3.0D4D 2x4 Fortuner. . . nice car, all the bells and whistles BUT whilst sitting in the car I realised that I would have to be an absolute idiot to buy a car that is so hot with criminals and I refuse to put my family in danger.

So as nice as the fortuner was, I will look for something a little less hijackable.

Next stop was Ford where I really didn't expect to find anything amazing, but was pleasantly surprised by the Ecosport as well as the Kuga. The top of the line Kuga is really nice but at R400 000 + it is a bit nuts. The 1 litre turbo Ecosport is very impressive and is only R249 000 for the top line model, leather auto etc.

Next I was thinking of looking at the Q3, really love Audi so I am sure it is as nice I expect it to be. Also quite like the Mazda CX5.

I will also look at the Forester. What else should I consider? Budget is about R350 000.

I was in the same boat as you a few months back, until i drove the Chev Trailblazer. Awsome vehicle, little more punch than the tuna but a great drive overall. VERY VERY Similar to the tuna without the high risk factor of it being hijacked. Has all that you can ask for as well. Go Test drive 1. I love my Trailblazer.

My money would be on a Forester at that price point. It's certainly the best offroader of the "softroaders" and a lot more comfy and economical than a Fortuner/Trailblazer. The new ones are even quite economical.

Perhaps you had better explain that one to the list of people that I have, asking me to find them an old Forester.

These uninformed "factual" answers on MyBB amaze me sometimes!

Trying to sell mine. I'll PM you the Gumtree Ad.

+1

There was a review of economical SUV's 2 months ago in car. They all said if the for kuga was on the list it would probably have won due to fuel efficiency and being a surprisingly good car.

If you say "best value" and you really mean it, it has to be a Renault Duster.

Will be launched next month.

This. AFAIK it's the latest issue of CAR, not 2 months ago... You can still grab a copy of the magazine off the shelves.
