How long can drinking water stay well outside a fridge?

If e.g. you poured yourself a glass of water and left it outside on a counter, can you still drink it the next day?

Sorry if it sounds gross, but I am curious :)

I always keep a jug of water on my desk and I do not alway finish it by the end of the day. The next morning, I throw it out and fill it up fresh from the tap or the fridge, but would that water that stood overnight be 'bad'?

Thanks.

LOL...AFAIK water can NOT "go bad" i mean - whats the difference if its in a bottle or in the rusty pipes underground?

Yes.

If it's from the tap or fridge then it's not "fresh" either, just cover the jug to prevent dust from blowing in and it will last... probably taste better.

tap water has a lot of chlorine and other crap in it. it'll take a long time for the bacteria in the air to affect the water, probably up to a week.

Well the sediment will settle to the bottom but still be un-noticeable as far as I have seen. And the only thing you have to worry about is the water going stagnant, which would take an age - so drink on...

it won't go off but (to me at least) it does taste different. I only drink fridge water though so all tap water tastes terrible IMO :D

if it's kinda greenish, or you see stuff moving in it, it's normally not a good idea to drink it. :D

Not long if its not sealed. The chlorine evaporates fast.

If its still sealed then it can last for ages.

What I'm not too sure about is what happens if you bottle tap water. i.e. refill a bottle.

what do you mean?

If I buy some bottled water...empty it and fill it with tap water and close the bottle again. How long is that safely drinkable?

Theoretically the chlorine should stay put...but I'm not sure.

probably about a week or so if it stays closed and longer if you bung it in the fridge.

We used to do that at school - only problem was by morning it would be frozen (in winter) - it was still nice and fresh when it thawed. ;)
