Question for Camera Guys

Talking about different cameras and people's opinion about it. One thing I've read over and over about the K100D series is that the AF performance is lacking. Well, I'll be damned. The one I got my old man focusses instantly. I mean, as soon as that shutter is halfway down, the image is in focus. So on saturday I stumbled upon a demo for £230 - not a bad deal. Got it with the DA 18-55 lens - a pretty sharp lens as far as kit lenses go.

So far I've only shot a few pics in the house under rather poor lighting (it's dark when I get back from work). Can't say I share the complaint about AF.

Totally agree with you - have had less hassels on the K100D's autofocus than on another camera I had - but it does depend on the lens as well.... The built in shake reduction/image stabilisation does it for me though.

So you settled on a Pentax? Hoping to borrow some of the old man's glass? :)

No no! This is the one for him. I'm just poking around with it :D

I'm still sold on the Canon 40D, but seriously, overseas trips tend to cost more than planned and after adding up flights, rental car, accommodation (does the fact that I'm travelling 6000 miles to be a the wedding qualify for a wedding gift ) etc, I might have to settle for something cheaper if I want to get myself one before the trip :(

Then again, the 40D + nifty fifty might be a stop-gap compromise, but I'm not sure how useful a 80mm fixed focus lens would be for all round snaps :)

Hehe, the first time the SR kicked in it scared the hell out of me - I thought I broke something. But yeah, it's pretty good. I'm pleased that the old man will be able to make use of it with his old glass - that's a huge bonus.

the 50mm is still very usable and the mark 1 zoom works as well as anything :)

I use the 17-55 f2.8 IS with my 30D for functions, actually this lens lives on my 30D.

I'm keen on getting the Sigma 30 1.4 for indoor shots, but only after I add the 10-22 to my glass collection, and then some time down the line, upgrade to the 40D.
Man this hobby is expensive.

This forum has inspired me to depart with loads of cash http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5

BTW - if starting out I'd recommend the book "Understanding Exposure"

Yep, don't have to get it all in one go. The non L version of the 24-105 lens I was looking at costs something like £150. That's good enough all round for me to start with. I can look at getting better glas when I come back :)

Bummer - thats a $1000 lens and its EF-s which (I think) means it wont fit on a full frame 5D. I'll have to hunt for something similar but EF and maybe non-IS.

That is the only downside of this EF-s lens and the price, and the dust, but the optics are top notch.
For my hobby needs I've committed to crops, with the 40D in the sights once I think I've saved enough.

I believe the holy grail for the FF in this FL is the 24-70 L, but they have yet to make a FF 17-55 equivalently.
My friend uses the 24-70 as his walk-around on the 1Ds - yes he's loaded.

Here's a few pics - some taken with the 350D (now my wife's) and the 30D and my old Nikon PS 995

You might see your home in some of these.
Why does the site strip the EXIF ?

Not quite but you probably flew over/past on your way to J'Bay. :)

So one of the shops have the Canon 30D on sale. Only in kit form though, but for less than I can get a body anywhere else. Two options:

Canon EOS 30D + EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 MkII Lens - £550
Canon EOS 30D + EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens - £700

Which lens would you go for, given the cost difference, and why?

Isnt that the same lens that comes with the other EOS kits? My inclinaton is to get the cheaper of the two and put that £150 towards a nice lens.

Yes it is. And after looking at the photozone reviews, I agree. The second one is worse

Now I just need to hope the sale lasts until payday... :D

His price on the 40D is pretty good - I'll keep this one in mind.

Frankie, are you up late or up early? :)

I very almost did buy from them but the postage and customs ended up making the saving so little it was hardly worth it. Looks like they have a sale going on now though. £615.99 for the 40D+18-55 IS lens. Not bad either!

I'm 8 hours ahead of you right now :) 14:38 here.

I've heard good reports about that new IS kit lens.

Hence all the China pictures - I see :) I'm hoping to visit later this year. When's a good time? I dont' want to catch the heavy tourist flow but I'd like to go before it gets too cold. I realise it's a pretty big place though - looking at Hong Kong and Chongqing areas.
