question Regarding RAM and VISTA

I am looking for laptops,

I wish to buy one that has 1 chip of X, now i am not familiar with vista but the guy at the store, says vista will report RAM as 2 x 512 for example, i am not sure if this is true, as XP just totals it, so i am unable to tell if it has 1 or 2 chips,

You can use SIW to see the amount and capacity of memory in each slot.

I'm not sure offhand if Vista would report the two modules, but i can tell you, that it will be totalled for usage. If your aim is to have one module, so that there's enough space to insert a second module later for upgrade - then by all means demand a single module of ram.

Either way, somehow it sounds like this guy at the store is an idiot!...

Ya well thats IC for you, i did, pick up a 2GB ddr2 667 SO DIMM for R369, so i am keeping it, but i must demand that they open the PC ? and actually look.

You pay for it, you demand that they do it. If they don't want to, then tell them the sale is off, and go to another shop. Use an extremely loud voice - you'll get more results with a loud voice that way, especially if the shop is full of customers

Besides, planning for future expansion is crucial - especially with RAM. You don't want to lose motherboard slot real estate just because two modules are cheaper than one - and this will be more expensive to you in the long run, as you'll have to buy two matching modules when wanting to upgrade your RAM to a bigger factor.

My vista only reports the total ram I have

Vista will only show total, not split up. (Well at default at least).. You could look at the PC while its booting. Should show before the MBR loads.

Vista needs at least 2 gigs of ram -dont get less, if there are 2 chips of 1 gig each thats fine
