Hi there,

Just to ask...is it normal for the ADSL line under the Microcom Router settings to report almost 400 errors and slightly more CRC errors in the space of 40minutes???

If not please advise.

Has no-one experienced this?? Yesterday it got worse, about an error almost every second...I kept resetting the router and playing with settings and finally when all was lost I tried one more reset on the router and the Internet was ok again.

Occasionally I am experiencing a great number of CRC errors and other errors on the Microcom ADSL router. Sometimes the numbers just keep climbing.

Does this mean there is a problem between our router and the DSLAM or between router and my PC?

Are there ways of reducing these errors??

2 or so CRC errors per second is " ok ".

just don't tell that to the 375375 helpdesk or telkom techie...they don't care about that or anything..

they've got a fixed mindset/frame of work/possible solutions..they don't/can't think outside the box..and if u seem to be smarter than them , even with evidence like u have , they ignore and continue their mess.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem...saterday nothing was working with my ADSL. Line would drop every 15min at least and it would usually take a router hard reset before I got sync back and then only for another 10-15min. ADSL helpdesk was completely useless like usual. Had the problem sunday as well. Currently awaiting the ol mighty telkom tech to pitch at my house to find nothing wrong and with no explanation as to what caused it.
I did however discover my noise margin drop sunday to 2 a lot which would explain why my line kept on dropping. Google search revealed that for adsl to work you need a noise margin of at least 12 down.... But I'm waiting breathlessly as to the tech's explanation.

ooo OOO i can give you screenshots of my router doing over 6 000 crc and other errors in +- 20 min and AND
adsl helpdesk says..as long as I can suft and download...everything is fine

yes - you see - they would like us to accept the following:

they don't have a proper maintenance schedule on their copper infrastructure (altho we are paying line rent!) - thus we have to accept the ruling that your line is running OPTIMAL. Not PERFECT - but OPTIMAL..

on a scale from 000 to 100 , optimal might be 0.0001 for h3llkom

i like it - they have an acceptable use/usage policy for their service..but when it comes to their service (line quality) - there is "none"

truth!

HA HA :D Some great comments and info :) thanks all.

At least now I can feel a little easy knowing this is normal to some extent.

Did you have rain or heavy winds about 3 days ago?

When it rains by us my ADSL goes for a ball of you-know-what for about 2 days....

And our dear favourite telecoms provider tells me: "We can send someone out, but if there is nothing wrong, we have to charge you xyz...."

some joints get wet - aircables mostly!

those that are supposed to be waterproof (underground) , well , aren't always 100% fine.

sure they will, they'll fix it on the same day that they will offer services 100% free

We've had problems with our line for over 2 years. When it rains, we dont bother using the line. Next time i see telkom pumping water out of the manholes... I'll take pictures for mybroadband

Funny enough when it rains close by my workplace our ISDN drops for people trying to dial in to our network. I have to go unplug and plug the cables back in again before those old school dial-up types can get into our network again. :/ just thought to mention although its not related to DSL.

CRC arrors accur when there is too much noise on the line.It could be a problem with Telkom/BT's (depending on which country you live in)line or the filter could need replacing.CRC errors are not normal at all.So the comments above stating that 2 crc's per second is normal is incorrect.

I know this as I provide network support to the U.K and if the circuit is running loads of CRC errors we get the service provider to test the line and/or swap the ADSL filter out.

LOL!

1) This thread is like 2 years old

2) This is South Africa. If you have experience with telecoms in South Africa, you'll know that it most definitely CAN be normal

3) Things may have changed since then

And most importantly:

4) The comments above say that Telkom calls this normal. Not us
