Quit new job within first month

Why not gym in the afternoon? Or weekends? Or even better, change gyms? Where there's a will there's a way

If the job was located in London, I can understand that his gym time in Pretoria was seriously reduced.

A friend:
Week 3,standard IT support ****hole
After the umpteenth night leaving after 8pm and needing to be back at 6am earning about as much as a mcdonalds worker got after 'deductions',while they were charging the clients a ton and a half- blocked work nrs on phone. Called in sick. Found better job same week

Had a new hire come in for some admin work (super basic, like data capturing). Current guy was moving into a new role the following week, so was just showing her the ropes, etc. She turned up on time, took notes, etc. At 13:00 she packed up her bag, and went downstairs to the canteen for lunch. And never came back. HR phoned her to ask her what she was playing at, to which she replied that it wasn't what she had in mind.

First time I'd seen anyone turn down ÂŁ20k for punching in numbers all day.

Had a guy who started working at my company on the Monday, never showed for work for the next three days and was fired on Friday.

Think he saw how much work he had to do and said stuff this.

lol, I love how you say fired....I'm pretty sure he already quit before that.

You did move internationally though? :p

lol, I was with that company for 8+ years.

company I did it with was with for x2 weeks and saw how everyone else was jumping ship, and the business didn't know what projects were priority (every day a new project was the priority) and said, Feck this and left the third week.

yeah. I get what you are saying. However, do that with a stable/large company and it will come back to haunt you. Most times :)

this was a large company and well known, what I find in the IT field is that it doesn't matter much since there is such a high demand of skilled people in IT, companies will look past that.

Yes.. twice actually, No, No

1st time resulted in some unemployment but given the options it was the right thing to do.

2nd time started and a month and a bit later I was still waiting on work as they didn’t have their act together. This vs being offered a job at a large international Corp who had stuff lined up. No brainer and I thought I did them a favor actually.

It’s a risky move and I’d not do it unless something was seriously wrong and staying would only have a worse impact. A probation period is a two way thing and people often forget this.

Leaving after that I.e. > 3months but less than 18months I reckon looks way, way worse unless you moving cities or company closes up.

A good coder gets snippets all over, looks at them, and improve on them.

A bad coder simply do a copypasta thing, and run when the popo hits the fan.

It's just hit me how old-fashioned I must be. I have never, ever gotten code from "all over".

If you can't code it from scratch then you probably don't fully understand what it is you're coding.

To answer the OP - yes, I've done this. The company I ended up working with for 11 years was a tad slow in their hiring process, so I had already started with someone else. It took a huge amount of soul-searching before I accepted their offer, though.

It shouldn't hurt and generally the three month probation period is for both you or the employer to say nay or yay. I've done it once, straight out of an intership I did with Xerox back in the day a small little company hired me, they said for development. Went in on the first day and I was allocated a PC in the dudes old dining room by the looks of it and given a list of numbers, I was supposed to sell the software that they were developing to schools and stuff. I asked could I at least look at the design docs before I even pick up the phone and where was the development. Their answer was here's the docs and sorry we didn't realise we hired to many developers and we needed someone on sales. At the time I was like okay fine let me take a look. Read through the design docs and what it was supposed to do, I cannot remember what now. It was a good idea, but it felt offish especially when it would probably end up being vapourware, I phoned my first customer, they were going on about how they'd need to rework their budget and see if they could fit this in as it sounds amazing. I told the guy listen don't fall for it, the product is years away from releasing and paying for it now would be a waste, I got up told them I'm going home. They were like oh you can't do that, I was like watch me and walked out the door.
Also thinking back driving 100km every day to work and back would've killed me, I got a job the next week doing something I'd never expected and turned my career from development.
My wife has done it after 3 days, she got a position as a book-keeper at a packing firm, on her first day she finds out that basically she's also the PA to the finance guy, she also has to make sure the stock from the warehouse manager is right and she has to do the book-keeping, for a pittance of a salary, she also was only allowed one coffee/smoke break, you had to bring your own coffee and milk.
Was surprised she lasted three days, the following Monday she just didn't go in, they phoned her and she was like sorry this isn't for her.

I quit on my first day once.

lol Ok it wasnt a permanent job but they wanted me to stick around for a month at least. Quit on the first day.

Done it once, yes. Was hired as the Fleet Manager for a transport & plant hire company. The workload and job spec were very different from what was presented in the interview. Just didn't click with the place and the management at all. Started on a Wednesday, the following Tuesday afternoon I went to the owner/MD and resigned. The next morning I went in to finish things off, hand in my office keys, etc. The HR lady called me in, handed me a cheque for the week's salary, along with the IRP5 doc for that payment. They said I could leave at 11am, which I did.

Once worked at a car dealership as a sales exec, they appointed a lady (also as a sales exec) and she got the desk next to mine. Showed her around, taught her the computer programs we use, etc. and she seemed happy and positive. The next day she didn't pitch for work, and we never heard of her again (the sales manager tried to contact her several times). She probably also figured, after one day, that this is not what she had in mind, I just hope something didn't happen to her.

I started working for a place selling Isabella Garcia (skin care, make up, perfume) products a few months ago. You have to call people the whole day long and try sell them this stuff. They measured your productivity and if you failed to meet the target, you were in trouble. First week was training, went fine. Second week was sales, I met my target. Third week, I got a throat infection and sounded like a dying frog and it hurt when I spoke. So I quit, there was no way I'd meet my target after being booked off for 3 days, barely able to speak

Got a guy that applied for a job here, got the job, accepted the offer and then resigned 2 weeks before he even started. :wtf:
