R 564 virtual desktops

NComputing is out to span the digital divide with a version of cloud computing called "virtualization," which essentially turns one machine into many.

i can just see it in RSA

...robber storms in "i want your 100 desktops that you have here"
...it guy points to the two odd pc
...robber

Let me complete that for you:

...robber shoots IT guy
...robber pushes two odd computers over and jumps on them
...robber runs away.
...IT guy says:"Bloody virtualization..." :p

As for the article. They keep on mentioning the lack of a required 1:1 ratio between computers and the people who use them. Now my question is: how does one connect to these VM's if you don't have a computer? That's right, you can't. And you need proper networking infrastructure as well, I might add. I have a VM on my proxy running Windows XP which I RDP into and Wifi just doesn't cut it. It's lan or don't bother.
Am I missing something here? I get the feeling I am, so if someone could enlighten me, it'd be appreciated.

Virtualisation is a great thing, the only thing holding us back in this country I think would be the bandwidth. RDP'ing into a local machine is bad letalone a system in the states.

There is a little box for every user to connect monitor, kdb and mouse, connected to the central VM using Ethernet cables. Max. distance 10m.

You're missing a bit :) NCcomputing makes the entire package, LAN, client - everything. It comes in a box, with everything you need....

Regarding the VM on your proxy that you RDP into, and RDP in general: RDP is not the most efficient display protocol around, ICA is better; but even then it should not be slow - perhaps it is your configuration? Bandwidth is not a major problem; latency is killer....

Also, there are different types of virtualisation. Virtualising servers is in no way reliant on a WAN.

Wonder if they still violate Microsoft's licensing.

Yes :)

Buzzword....*yawn*

LOL, yeah, some people thinks so. Standard bank has moved 5000 physical servers to around 800 virtual hosts. Think of the cost savings in terms of power, cooling and maintenance. Virtualisation may not be for everybody, but it is something that everybody should at least consider....
