R100 billion needed for SA broadband

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Government needs to set aside very little money and rather ensure that policy, regulation and law are correct; most of this involves reducing the scope for rent seeking and having less interference.
Arg BBI really like saying stupid things

“We could go the India route – cheap and quick – but we don’t want to do that. As a country we take ourselves seriously.”

Kwele welcomed the appointment of the new minister of communications Yunus Carrim. “With the new minister, we will be able to move quite quickly,” Kwele said optimistically.

2nd statement does not compute with the 1st :erm:

Lets consider this, lets take a meter (1m) of fiber optic cable.
Market Price ~ lets say R750
Price after government Tender Process R3000.
So yes they would need R100 Billion for everything

what was the figure floating around last year? think it was AKC & the Sunshine Band or one of the other mobiles that came up with an estimate for an NBN....

maybe we could sell the corvettes?

except that we sort of have an NBN - Telkom :D (and their market cap is what 1/10th of the punted figure)

its not the figure that 100bn is needed ultimately to be invested into broadband infrastructure its this idea of crowding out investment and making it a lobbying effort - and all the accompanying rent seeking and tenderpreneurship which accompanies such an approach. Dropping the taxation on ICT will probably have a far greater affect on increasing broadband expansion than taking 10 times the amount taxed and ploughing it into politically driven projects.

If we consider South African nationals as our base priority leveraging existing systems and 1 billion rand can make a major impact. The total cost of SAnREN has been what?

R100 billion needed for SA broadband & a competent enough government.

iirc it was closer to R32Bn... 300% increase over 12 months - consultancy fees escalation?

Nothing else but feeding frenzy round no 2 at Broadband Infraco ..
