R1400 for ADSL Install.

I am having a new ADSL line installed. Went in the other day to make sure it is still on the way, and I asked the guy what the total cost of the install was (it's a 4mbps ADSL and telephone install).

He says R1400.

Why is it so crazy high??
 
Because if you didn't cough up your 1400, Aunt Pinky and her frineds wouldn't get their bi-monthly executive bonuses.

dude, i have no idea. I don't even know what an "installation" is. is it not that they just have to flick a switch somewhere to activate your ADSL and phone line? unless you have no copper wire running to or inside your house, which i highly doubt.

rathern say you will do a self install and save yourself an a$$load of cash.
 
pinky is currently overseas on "business"... how do you think she enjoys those business class flights

Sorry Guys, on a serious note, what do they actually do when they "install" a line? do they actually put copper lines into your house, or what?

Installation is free...-from what I can recall......the cost could be for services, that are charged pro rata + one month in advance...so R418 for ADSL access, plus line rental, add to that if you taking Telkom as your ISP...could add up to the amount quoted.

Opt for a self installation
How do they fit a phone all depends what is existing
but a complete installation entails 2 connections in the exchange and cross connection in the street box and in the distribution box
if no wires to your house they must run the wires to your house and wires in your house then create the line on the sustem for the phone and the ADSL on another system R1400 sounds to much
 
It's not an 1400 installation charge. Your first invoice, will be 1400 is what he meant to say. As previously mentioned, this includes the cost of installation, pro-rata rental for the first month, as well as rental for the following month considering that line rentals are paid an month in advanced.

He told me that there would be an installation fee of R1400. I'm 100% sure that is what he said. The reason this shocked me was because I have had lines installed in the past and I can't remember it being that expensive.

Why would he give me a pro-rata amount now? They don't even know when the lines will be installed, so how can they work out a pro-rata amount? I highly doubt that is the case.

There are brand new copper lines installed, so they don't need to do anything. All they have to put in is that little RJ11 box.

Ask him for a detailed breakdown of the costs.
 
Wow, everytime someone has a problem with Telkom, it sounds like a freak story/accident :D

Anyway, did you try check how much lower (1mbps) speed will cost? Is a telephone line already installed in your house? If not, then hard luck, you going to have to pay that cost.

Another alternate is to get the MTN Uncapped Pro internet for 899 per month on a 24 month contract. It has a 10GB Cap, after the 10GB is used, your speeds will be throttled to 384kbps.

I would rather pay the fee, get the line installed and enjoy the glorious A Grade 4mbps ADSL.

Went in where ? To a Telkom Direct shop ?
If so, why don't you try phoning 10219 and ask them for clarification.
 
1. Yes I went to a Telkom Direct shop.
2. There is a physical telephone line already, but I do not have a telephone line active at telkom, so I need to order it and have that installed with my ADSL.
3. I need the full 4mbps and I dont want to have anything except Mweb Uncapped.
 
Why don't u order the uncapped 3 months trial cos its free installation and u can upgrade the line speed after.
 
I can't because I have other ADSL lines in my name. I also want to order more ADSL lines soon, so that won't work.
