R2.00/mb vs < R0.50/mb

Hi

I justed wanted to find out if and/or when Vodacom will be matching Virgin Mobiles prepaid data rate of R0.50 per mb?

Heh, they won't until Virgin/Cell-c got an HSDPA network matching Vodas coverage. They'll tell you they are ALREADY matching it. Just buy a 1GB bundle.
 
Jeez, that should take sometime.

Cellc arent exactly a forward thinking, progressive, go-get-em type business.

They actaully the opposite - slow, uninspiring, boring, - they just move with the tide.

My pet snail progresses more than Cellc.
 
And yet Cellc moves really fast compared to ICASA.

Well, VC is still struggling to get their PPDB-able billing backend into action. This is supposedly 'ready' and they have already started testing it.

VC are supposed to launch their new PPDB soon.....but,

When will Vodacom be matching Virgin Mobiles prepaid data rate of R0.50 per mb? /me thinks not nearly soon enough... :(

With the new rules ICASA is enforcing on Telkom/ADSL, I think ADSL would become a more liable option in the future.
 
do you think it's better to go to adsl again since i'm now on 3g vodacom?

Yes, not immediately though. I would go for ADSL, when officially:
-Local becomes uncapped.
-Adsl becomes unshaped.
-Adsl access charge/ line rental ‘disappears’.

But only then would it be a more liable option to switch to ADSL.
Just my 2c's...

i admit defeat about the petition thing.

But what exactly is the point of a discussion forum if we just sit on our laurels and complain and not do anything to help ourselves?
 
As was suggested by another forumite, if you believe that you are getting a raw data rate deal from Vodacom, then simply switch to one of Vodacom's competitors - it's not like you have to have a specific cellery number to transfer data - you don't even have to wait for number portability to start using a competitor for data - just go out and buy a starter pack, and ultimately if enough people voice their opinion with their feet, and Vodacom starts to have a serious nervous twitch about that R2.00/MB, then the rate is likely to come down - this is the nature of a market where consumers force competitors to actually compete for the money and attention of consumers...

PS: I seriously doubt that there are currently more than 450k consumers across Vodacom and MTN and CellC using any of these networks for data, IOW nowhere near 1mil.
 
It's true ... after all thats what competition is all about. You have the option to switch when you feel you are being shafted by one company. At least such options in telecoms are finally becoming available to South Africans.

Data prices overall in this country (not just wireless) are still way overpriced for a developing country. Even 50c per mb is very high but it's a jump in the right direction and it's the kind of price that starts to border on reasonable. I may just get a Virgin sim myself for backup reasons.

The Voda R2/Mb can hurt or even ruin someone financially if they did not watch out. Imagine your kid hops on your laptop and downloads 20GB of movies in a weekend and you don't know about it until vodacom sends you a bill the following month for R40,000. That is extremely scary. I watch my usage with Vodacom like a hawk and thankfully I have no little Johnny who can ruin us financially. I wonder how many people have had a fright like that from Vodacom?

Vodacom buys their ALL their bandwidth from Telkom, and so does MTN and Virgin .... So why are the variances on price so vast?:confused:
 
Vodacom and MTN make sense if you are going to use 1Gb every month. It is then worth paying R500 per month.

MTN do have the 10Mb, 100Mb and 350Mb bundles, but you can only buy one per month so it is only worthwhile if you're going to use close to the amount in the bundle. And then you're still paying twice the price of Virgin.
