R2.00/mb vs R0.50/mb

I wonder if Pick n Pay will sell VM airtime at discount like they do with Vodacom and MTN airtime. Will make my VM data even cheaper. :D

Yeah, there are good deals out there. MTN now offers R105 airtime/month for R35/month on MyChoice Topup 75. [But it is a 24 month contract.]
Nevertheless, wait two months to get R210 airtime, add on a R15 top up, and you effectively you get 350 MB for R35x2 + R15=R85.

So ideally, if you get two of these deals, you just swop between the two each month and get 350 MB each month for R85. So that is 24c/MB :cool:

well now 24c/MB sounds good... all this calculations only goes to show how low our data costs can actually go

Isn't the R35 only for the first year and then they charge you the full R105 thereafter like Vodacom does.

I've got the add in front of me. You get this deal over the full 24 months. Also CLI is included in the price and you have the option to take itemised billing at R17 something extra.
 
I am a new 3g customer - got a 3g card, and now I'm faced with options. I'm going prepaid obviously, because who wants to be hit with a massive data bill at the end of the month.

So my options:

Vodacom R2/megabyte - No PPDB Yet. R5 for a simcard
MTN R2/Megabyte OR 10/100 Meg bundle @ R1/meg in bundle
CellC/Virgin No 3g (i want 3g speeds)

So...I bought an MTN simcard for R4.99, activated it for data, and now I'm online at R1 per meg. Why use vodacom?

If I was using 3G from one fixed location, then maybe you would have a valid argument - why use Vodacom?. However, with travelling all over KZN, Vodacom has a FAR better presence than MTN, especially in many of the smaller towns and on the south coast of KZN. Availablity of the service is of far greater importance than the difference in cost (which btw is negligible on contract!).

Speaking to others who travel around KZN and made the mistake of choosing MTN over Vodacom, MTN's 3G coverage SUX big time :mad: - both in the large centres (Durban and Pmb) and in the outlying areas.

So now you know "Why use Vodacom" - cos they are the LEADING cellular network in South Africa! :D

They have had there problems while the network is growing, but I am sure they are doing their best to sort it out and provide their customers with the best service possible.

Unfortunately not everyone (including me) can afford a 1 GB bundle for R500 when all we use is a few hundred MB. So if I'm using 150 MB per month is it fair for me to be paying R300 ?

Well at least they have some fans. But then so has Zuma :D
 
As long as data usage is growing as fast as it does at present, there is no reason for VC to drop its rates.

A drop in rates could increase the demand for data services to the extend that VC (and MTN) can't expand their network fast enough. The fair amount of complaints about instability of the data networks on these forums are indicative that the demand growth at the current data rates could already outstrip the abilities of the cellular companies to expand their networks.

I'm moving friends etc over to use their cellphones as internet connectivity units - for the normal home user, it is cheaper than using Telkom dial-up - the saving made by cancelling the ISP is often enough to provide effective free internet to such people. They use less worth of data per month than they used to pay for the ISP - and the Telkom dial-up cost (typically another R100+ per month) is a direct saving.

It would be interesting to see what Neotel will offer next year and how fast they will be able to roll out their retail offers to end users.

The current high demand for GPRS/3G is artificial due to Telkom's inability to provide ADSL at proper rates and to install within a decent time and maintain the network in a reliable fashion.

To be honest, if I was at one of the cellular giants, I would be very reluctant to invest in this artificial environment - especially with the risk of Neotel entering the market with low priced products and a 24-hours installation kind of environment. The current inflated data usage on GPRS/3G/HSDPA could vaporise in a few months.
