ok, a mate of mine is looking to put together a top of the range computer for about 30000... monitor included... he has sorta decided on what he wants, but i would liek to give him some more options with inputs from u guys... preferably asap...

I'd get a 20k 1080p 40" LCD... and a 10k machine... but thats me.

he mainly wants it for games/movies etc and not to have to upgrade too much in the coming years... and i think he still wants to overclock it as well..

Why anyone would need

p35 board ----preferably from gigabyte
Intel QX6800
2-4gb DDR2 800 RAM(you can never have too much)
500 W PSU(at least)
8800 GTS/GTX ULTRA
74GB Raptor HDD + 2 400 GB HDD(i would go for seagate 7200.10's)
CPU case---up to what your buddy likes

above are the componant i think he should take, exactly which spec is up to him but to be honest 30K on a PC is ridiculous. If you could maybe description of what he wants to do with it, it would help alot

You're welcome to PM me with this info

ok, thanks, i will chat to him tommorow and get some more details, or even get him to join this forum so he can chat to u guys directly... thanks for the inputs

Yeah, I wouldn't spend more than R11k on the PC. Regardless of what you have it will be edging towards obsolescence in two years time.

Edit: Also, also I'd suggest he go small form factor. If watching movies is one of his things, he can get some pretty sweet HTPC cases for a bit of cash.

Yip, whatever he buys now will be surpassed a few times in 12 months. Excl. screen he can pretty much have the best (without having to pay the premium price for all the top of the range components) for around R12 000 to R15 000 depending on the peripherals

ajax sahahra has some specials on semptron's and cheap hynix ram with a 8500gt

now thats the kinda rig you need to give him

then get him a 50" lcd tv for all his porno

whoa wait wait. You'd kick your self if you waste R30 000 right now when new chips are coming out : /

And DDR3 is just starting.. honestly I'd wait for the new AMD and/or intel CPU's and some DDR1600 RAM :D If you're going to be spening that much already... I guess theres won't be anything wrong with QX Core 2's for a while, but you might as well future proof.

New Intel chipset, ATI high end card... lots to wait for, but I guess there always is. :p

Hi all, I'm the guy Ajax30 mentioned - glad to join, I like a crowd with savvy *and* humour ;)

I have some IT experience and am simply just tired of cocking around with undergrad hardware. Games, AVI/DivX/MP3 etc encoding/converting, movies (and of course smut ;) ) are my PC pastimes these days. Looking to investigate overclocking too.

Have sum spare cash, so this is what I've been dreaming up after much research & budgeting & considering what's available in RSA:

Gigabyte Triton 180 Case
Cooler Master Pro 850W Power Supply (One of few SLi out there)
Gigabyte 3D Galaxy II Liquid Cooling (maybe GFX cooling add-on too, later)
Asus Striker Extreme/Gigabyte Nvidia nForce680i-DQ6 (not sure yet which one)
Intel E6850 Core 2 Duo
Kingston DDR2-800 2GB (2x1GB) nVidia SLI Ready HyperX Memory Module Kit
2x XFX (PV-T80F-SHF9) GeForce 8800GTX (prices prevent Ultra=insane)
Samsung 226BW LCD Monitor
Seagate SATAII (whatever is gonna suit this setup...)

Only prob with HDD selection is I intend running Win XP Pro and although I dig the idea of 2x HDD RAID 0, it seems that XP Pro won't install on new drives RAID 0, according to web discussions and Win help files :( Lot's probs out there... ideas/thoughts?

Do you really need 2 raptors in RAID though, they're obviously not for storage, just for your games/windows/apps that you want to run fast. A bit expensive to bother buying two just for the gains from RAID.

Nothing wrong with the rest of that, but you'd be able to buy higher spec stuff in a few months... I guess that's too long to wait, I wouldn't be able to just sit around with 30k.

This is far too much to pay for any home PC. You will not really see much difference in performance for your money anyway.

If he's serious about overclocking enough to spend 30k on it then he would know what he wants anyway. As for games, an 8800GTS will most likely be perfectly fine. As for movies pretty much any pc can do that...

For games and movies the suggestions to buy a nice big LCD is a good plan...

Come now, linking incredible connection :(

I'm sure you could get a better PC for less than R20 000 if you built it yourself.
