R30000 machine....

I would buy 2 or 3 PCs rather. A home entertainment one (small and quiet - dont need the top end specs)) and a gaming one and maybe a nice little file server (cheap CPU, motherboard and RAM with lots of Hard drive space). And then link them with a nice Gigabit network.

/me wishes he had R30 000 to spend in computer stuff, it would be so cool.

Get the C2D CPU, 2x2Gb DDR2-800, 2x8800GTX, the 850W PSU, the 2x74Gb Raptors plus 2x500Gb SATA2's for storage, a really big case with 120mm fans front and rear (or else water-cooling). Don't forget to get good sound for those games and movies, along the lines of an X-Fi (the XtremeMusic or higher, since the lower range don't have actual X-Fi chips) and something like the Logitech Z-5500's. Lastly, let's not forget a pair of Dell 22" wide LCD's. That'll eat up your funds fairly well.

getting 2 x 8800gtx's would be made consideriing they dont support dx 10.1

rather buy one now and buy the new 10.1 vga cards when they released

Some good points there chaps.

I'm thinking ignore RAID so far.

Can't really wait either, my desktop went tits up and I need something.

I don't *really* want to give up R30K either, this is just a wishlist. I was hoping to get Supplier prices from a friend of mine, but that fell through. That would've helped get it to about R20K - R25K (more realistic budget-wise).

Well keep 'em coming and I'll let you all know when I've put it it together :)

Friend bought a PC for 25000. His 8800 overheats and his Asus Striker Extreme was replaced 3 times (PC crashed more and more often, crashing 2 seconds in to booting the BIOS) he now has an Intel chipset, Gigabyte if I remember correctly.

Spend money on tried and tested chipsets, no need to be bleeding edge. Then buy a nice case to water cool it, for overclocking. Buy extras to cool the ram, graphics card and so forth. Spend the money on 2 LCD screens, as someone said, spend 20k on the LCD, 10k on the PC. I would. Though 10k might just go in to 14 750G Seagates. My pc can take 14 disks.

Also, plug your 14*750 in to a varsity network, download everything. Your client will thank you forever for getting him 6 months worth of 16 hours a day TV. heh

Hey Outlaw69,

I just bought myself a Core2Duo 2.66GHz with 2GB DDR2-800 RAM and a 8800GTS-320MB. It is truly amazing. I did a lot of research before buying the PC, i suggest you do the same. As for getting a 8800GTX or the ULTRA, I could not justify the price difference, and after researching the 8800GTS-640MB version, I saw that often the 320MB would either match or out perform it at 1280X1024 resolution (This is the max resolution of the 19" LG LCD I also bought). The money I saved by buying the 8800GTS will go towards buying a new generation card in the future. I went for a normal LCD not a widescreen as when I do watch movies, the PC is connected to the TV. Send me a PM if you would like me to sort you out some good prices.

Remember, whatever you buy now, WILL be outdated at some point, you have to find the balance between how much you would like to pay now compared to how long you want the system to last. If you spend twice as much on a PC, it will not last twice as long :)

Upgraded my PC in December for about R30k excluding the monitor... And even with all the new technologies that was introduced since then the performance boost I could get with 30k is less than 10%... Yes the PC would cost only half that now, but I also have 7 months of gaming on it already.
I like to buy a PC for a 3 year period, after that I give the system to my monther or brother and buy/build a new one that will last for the next period of 3 years :D

Just dont look back on your choices too fast :D

Why anyone would need

p35 board ----preferably from gigabyte
Intel QX6800
2-4gb DDR2 800 RAM(you can never have too much)
500 W PSU(at least)
8800 GTS/GTX ULTRA
74GB Raptor HDD + 2 400 GB HDD(i would go for seagate 7200.10's)
CPU case---up to what your buddy likes

above are the componant i think he should take, exactly which spec is up to him but to be honest 30K on a PC is ridiculous. If you could maybe description of what he wants to do with it, it would help alot

You're welcome to PM me with this info

You Forgot the 1TB hardrives!

well firstly if you want get 2 x raptors in raid man

or get 2 normal drive in raid 0 the speed is just insane

If you spend the R30k, you will be paying R10k too much for only a few fps more that will not make the worlds difference. You will only get bragging rights

You had better chain that thing to the floor. Some dude is gonna steal it and sell it for R300 roadside.

30K is ridiculous. Rather buy a level-headed high end PC now and then another one in 1.5 years. Its certainly gonna be more bang per buck given the exponential increases in processing power. (Unless you plan on dropping another 30K soon).

anyone seen a guy on the road lately selling pc's? i need some parts... :p

Any ideas/probs buying from USA (NewEgg)? prices seem way cheaper...

+-$500 for EVGA GTX is superb!

Also need help selecting Mobo (really want 680i chipset) - Asus/Gigabyte/XFX are all available in RSA - any experiences/thoughts besides price?

i dont get it?

i am buying what i think is an uber machine for R14 000

specs are as follows:
amd 6000+ dual core
asus M/b
creative XI-FI sound card
500w thermal take psu
antec case nsk4400
4GB kingston ddr2 800 (4 x 1Gb modules)
22" samsung monitor
geforce 8800 GTS 640MB
2x 320GB SATA H/D

fsk for R30 000 just buy him a G5 Mac.

Well the thread title was a little misleading... he doesn't have/want to spend thaaat much.

I'd also go for something around R20 000 or possibly less.

btw Halicon, don't you know that you can ONLY buy Intel CPU's thesedays?

Buy a PC for R10000 every year. Keep components like LCD, case ect. Will have the newest technology and constant gaming performance for 3 years, rather than 1.5 yrs.
