My sister uses mtn data on farm.
Only mtn available.

Every month the account is about R2000.
She had lots of friends who use the internet and now R40 000.
She query, but the statement shows how the data was used.

Can't you put a blocking gig / rands value on an account. [like adsl]

With Vodacom you can. We call it a limit lock. You specify a Rand value for usage....usage will include calls, sms, mms and data usage. Anything that incurs a charge basically. When that limit is reached...the line gets locked untill the 1st of the next month when it refreshes. You have to request it though...not sure if MTN has the same thing. Their billing systems seems to be on the fritz going according to some of these posts....so not sure if it would help.

Nope, vodacon does not. Had a few friends that got bill shock thanks to 3g data.

40 grand on MTN? i've recently heard of one guy blowing 33 Grand with MTN Roaming, but that's at R100/1mb...

how many gigs are 40k ?

Not a lot by international standards

A really dof calculation on my part gives me the following:

R40k divided by R389 (2GB on prepaid) = 103 (rounded off)
So that's 103x2GB packages = 206GB

If that were at those prices, but if she's on contract, that R40k is out of bundle so it should be way less than that, the data anyway that she transferred.

But ja, nice friends to come in a rape and pillage a 3G connection like that.
Ouch!

lol i clicked on the link thinking your actully selling papaja.... :(

lol well isnt vodacom like R1.20 a mb? its almost 34Gigs then

yeah but why not get bundles? i don't understand why people want to pay R1,20 a meg if they know they are downloading more than the average user?

40 grand gets you about 200GB if bundles are purchased

You can add a bill limit your contract. But it doesn't really work so nice. Cause it works on 16202's usage. And since 16202 only updates like in weeks the potential for going over the bill limit is still high. Its clearly stated in the terms and conditions! :-)

how convenient

it's strange how the prepaid system updates so fast, cutting one off at exactly R0,00 - where contract just "doesn't really work" enabling one to run into huge bills even if a limit is added

@Pilgrim....if your friends did not actually request the limit from Vodacom it would not have been loaded and therefore the line would not have been locked because of high usage. You also receive notification sms's on your usage....warns you when you reached 50& ; 70% and finally 90% of limit. after that line gets locked. Anyway...this is MTN thread so I am outta here....just wanted to suggest this in case MTN offers the same service. But as said by cavedog...the MTN system takes a along time to update so with MTN it might not work anyway.

i have to agree with you on this....

Not everyone is going to even know about the data bundles, especially out on a farm where it's your only internet. I'm sure MTN would rather you don't know when they can charge great rates like R1/MB and still have people supporting them.

But nevermind that, the prices are absolutely pathetic, how do most people here still support Vodacom/MTN broadband? I mean you actually say "R40 000 will get you 200GB" as if that's even better or acceptable.

Exactly. Funny how if it suits them, they can get the system to work 100%, but if it does not, they struggle to get the system to work.

The problem with bill limiting is it only kicks in after you got your R2000 data usage session. It does NOT update real time.

Sure, their limits kicked in, but by that time it was waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy too late.

I still fail to understand how on earth it is possible that these companies that rake in billions in profit every year simply cannot provide decent bandwidth usage monitoring facilities.
