Hello Forumites

My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to build a PC capable of playing games half-decently for R4000.

I require:
A PSU
A Motherboard
A CPU
RAM
Hard Drive
Graphics Card

The hard drive should be in the region of 160GB or more, and it would be a major bonus for the graphics card to have a 256bit bus.

What would you suggestions be?

motherboard, very good motherboard for the price as with all amd's R650

cpu R999

memory R800

vga R900

R600

add another 400-600 for case and another 300 for dvd writer

your about 1k out of having a decent pc for gaming, 4k is just 2 little

you still need a case but you will need to increase your budget for that

I have a case and DVD writer... Just no power supply.

I'm thinking more along the lines of E4600... Just not sure of what motherboard to get. Would ideally like to put it with DDR800 RAM, but only 945 chipset motherboards in the price range. How much of a jump did you notice going from DDR667 to DDR800? I'm still sitting on DDR667 myself :(
And that's an awesome price for that 3650... What would its competitor in the nVidia range be?

snerd i gave u amd because your going to get crap motherboards with intel for your current price range

amd's lower end mobo's are cheap and packed full or stuff and are really good quality

intel cheap boards are nasty for gaming man, cheap crap

8600gt would be the nvidia choice

that ati whips the 8600gt and its cheaper

Also check prices from pcint and get a proper comparitive quote from landmarkpc after you have an idea of what you want. He is very reasonable with his prices on things.

Any chance of a 256bit card in the price range? I'm having a look at the X1950 or something around there... Otherwise, 8600GT just doesn't seem like it's worth it :(

There's one of those in the classifieds for R600...

For Intel boards, what chipset should I aim for?

[P5KPL-VM] - ASUS Intel G31, LGA775, 1333(OC)FSB, 2xDual DDR2, 1x PCI-x16, On Board VGA, 1xPCIx1, 2xPCI, 1xATA100, 4xSATAII, Gbe Lan, 6ch-Sound, Max 8xUSB, Micro ATX R 544

Core 2 Duo E7200 2.5Ghz (1066FSB 3MB) R 1,184

2GB DDRII-800 R 353
mobo only has 2 slots so buying 1 2gb stick you could upgrade to 4 gig in future

160GB-7200RPM 2MB Cache R 445

Geforce 9600GT 650Mhz 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI XT Edition R 1,499

See, killa... that's why we love having you around... Just a quick Q: is that before or after VAT? I'd consider dropping that processor a little and going for a faster hard drive. But that graphics card sounds great. How's your PoV card treating you? The prices on those aren't bad at all.

G31 == decent chipset? Are the Pxx series chipsets better? Or are they the same without onboard graphics?

Killa did you add vat? If yes...then they must have cut prices like mad since I bough from them. Paid 600 for 2gb.

Those are either ex VAT or they are from Zones...

Edit- they are from pcint so they are ex vat then...
