R5 a day for uncapped Wi-Fi

While the scarred pavements left from the early fibre rollout in South Africa’s suburbs continue to heal, many suburban residents have slipped into the bliss of lightning-fast Internet speeds and uncapped data.

A middle-of-the-range uncapped fibre package has become so affordable that the cost of a gigabyte of data becomes almost negligible and connectivity becomes a seamless part of life.

With the world at your fingertips, it is easy to forget that these affordable uncapped broadband services are only available to around 10% of South African homes.

I believe that the best way to get internet to the masses is to make sure that 30% of ISP's are owned by black people. Because um they worked hard for it? And they will surely help getting it out to the majority and hmmm nevermind.

Starlink is definitely not affordable, and they don't plan on making it cheaper either. It is also not designed to be used in densely populated areas. In those areas there are much better existing options, fibre, LTE, wifi etc.

These types of projects is where investment and policy should be focused, but there is no money to be made for cadres.

You don't get it. There is a community project, can't remember what it's called, there was a documentary about it. Not only is it entirely owned by the local community but the whole community benefits from it, the people on the ground who should. With Starlink there can be a thousand such projects.

It should not matter who owns the enabling infrastructure. But these pigs are so shortsighted and greedy they can't see that and how they are hurting their own people. Or maybe they can but just don't care as that does not benefit connected cadres.

Ja whatever. LTE is not affordable. I live on a farm, I will N-E-V-E-R get fibre, I have to pay a R1000 for Fixed LTE. If I use webex No one can play online gaming or stream something like Netflix. They must wait till I am finished. What I want is something like Supersonic's AirFibre product, then at least I can conduct my business in a way that is speedily and productive. I'll pay happily the price for Starlink, because it is a low latency solution and it will cost me $99 per month.

Whatever? You are exactly the target market for Starlink, if you can afford it. However, Starlink is not the solution to affordable internet for everybody.
