Christmas gifts came early for some in Qumbu when robbers left five boxes containing R5 million on the rooftop of a Spar store, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

"It was weird when we got to the scene, but due to the police's quick response the money was recovered," said Superintendent Muzikisi Fatyela.

A six man gang, wearing balaclavas, struck at the Spar on Friday night, gaining entrance through the rooftop.

"They managed to put R5 million in boxes and were climbing off the roof when police arrived."

Fatyela said the men got scared and left the boxes on the rooftop before they fled the scene.

All R5 million was recovered and returned to the store owner.

Police were alerted after the store's alarm went off. No arrests have been made.

"The shop owner was very happy that the money was recovered. He told us Christmas came early for him," Fatyela said.

R5 million in cash?
Assuming cash vans come and collect the cash for depositing each day or every second day. Then this guy has a massive turnover each day.

Does the law require that I contact the police if I find cash?

Yes, if there is a rightful owner then you can be charged with theft should you fail to do so.

Just difficult proving the true owner. Not in this case, clearly, but if it was some random bag on some random rooftop...

it could be blood money. I don't want to use money that somebody died for.

And it is not your responsibility what the police do with it. To keep it because you say the police are corrupt means you are just another criminal.

When you hand it to the police make sure the media know about it. That way it is unlikely to be appropriated. And hand it over to the station commander at a major police branch.

If there's no rightful owner, i'll gladly assume ownership. It's not different from adopting a stray dog.

/waits...

There's your problem. There always is an owner.

I was just pulling your stick young man. If it doesn't belong to you, hand it over to the rightful owner or to the police. As you suggested, let some sensationalist know about it before you do the good deed.

I would be twitchy. Not for any moral reason, but that amount of money might indicate syndicates and mafia types who may come after it. I don’t want that sort of grief.

hehe... you're wrong on that count as well! :p

Erm, for interest sake, i am willing to bet that almost every single note in your wallet right now was at some point or other used for something not completely "savoury."......... For INTEREST sake :p

For MY sake I would donate 50% to animal charities of my choosing and use the other 50% to buy a nice house in a nice quiet rural neighborhood where no-one knew me :D
