R700 384kbps uncapped yah or nah???

To me it all depends on gaming pings really. Yes, P2P will help, but i'm more interested in gaming. And then 700 is a bit steep.

I must say this situation is getting quite frustrating. I do understand that the ISP's are going through test packages but as a cybersmart customer I'm stuck in two minds.

One, do i maximise the uncapped service until it lasts or two, do I go "easy" and try help save the package?! At the moment, i am choosing to maximise as that is what I am paying for. If i received an email from cybersmart asking us to try lowering our usage, say between 45 & 65 gigs, i would consider it, but that needs to be clearly communicated, not thumb sucked from the customer.

We also should not forget that we are talking about uncapped on 384kb not compared to the speeds they have in Europe and America. I know that we are behind but ISP's shouldn't be milking people of their cash.

I hope this will be sorted out in 2010 and we as a country can move into the world of established uncapped internet.

Also, how many of us would walk into a shop and pay for a full cake but only receive half a cake in return? Bad example but you should get what I'm trying to say. So, we're paying over R500 for uncapped but shouldn't be using more than 40 gigs.

I want what I've payed for.

If you want that then you must be willing to pay more, service is simply not financially viable at this point in time.

It's lame though that SAOL and Cybersmart offered these things without being able to keep them going. Maybe they were testing to see what the uptake would be like?

What's lame is screamer and digichilli coming in at the price they did for what they purport to be uncapped unshaped accounts where clearly they are not. Their networks have been so throttled and degraded that they not worth half of what they charging for them.

Cybersmart has never offered anything officially and saol has had to can what is an authentic uncapped unshaped product, however they will be maintainting all 384 users currently subscribed so kudus to them for that.

If dc and screamer were offering the same they would be canning it too.

You know I have been reading these Uncapped threads for a while and it amazes me, is the only reason to get uncapped so that you can download the interwebz onto your hdd? I got it cause I can't stand having to monitor my bandwidth.

I did a calculation that took into account the IPC cost as well as international fibre cost of a 1mbit link and it came to about R8000. Then looked at the new uncapped packages on offer from the various ISP's and came to the conclusion that they must have planned for 8:1 contention to make a profit.

Guys that works out to 48kbps per person, what amazes me it that guys think 384 uncapped means "384 guaranteed uncapped" not "up to 384 uncapped". BTW 48kbps works out to 15 gig's per month, unlesss this is the average or lower the packages are unsustainable.

This isn't an attack folks just a warning, if uncapped vanishes because we can only think "I wanna give it a 90gig hiding" and get a copy of every tv series and movie made in the last 5 years then we only have ourselves to blame.

So you want us to have uncapped but within reason?

That is like taking a starved little boy that has been living in a jungle for his whole life and taking him to a candy store that is open for free now to little boys that has been living in a jungle for their whole lives and tell him, listen you can smell the stuff, but not eat it, ok... otherwise you have only yourself to blame if we kick you out.

Uncapped means uncapped, simpe as that and that is all there is to it.

And as for the original question, no 700 is too much. We are finally making progress in this country and that would be going backwards again, so nope.

What SAOL and DC and all the rest started is great, i hope they keep it up and that things will only improve from now on.

Maybe one day we won't feel like we need to download the whole interweb in one sitting, but i am afraid that is what you get if you grew up in a jungle and feel a bit famished...

I don't think so. Afaik they work on a bandwidth type system and not amount of data (but maybe the others do too?), they must have provisioned their bandwidth accordingly to cater for a certain number of accounts at the minimum speeds, and bursting (on DC) for when the network is not heavily utilised.

Imo they are having problems getting it to work perfectly sure, but I think it will get sorted sooner or later (hopefully sooner). It doesn't make sense for them (especially DC as they are a new startup) to offer something they can't keep going. DC's whole product is uncapped, if they decide to drop that and go for a cappping model it will be uninteresting to people. They'd need some ridiculously low per gb rate to keep people on.

The others all have existing client bases that may just stay on even when they drop their uncapped offerings.

They advertise it as uncapped and it is but they degrade and shape the network to such and extent that users cannot physically get a full 90gigs a month should they choose to utilize the network 24/7.

And I believe the only way they can remain profitable is by degrading the network at least until they have enough new subscribers on board who are using 30gig and less.

Launching an uncapped product on a forum like myBB where tech savvy users will milk the system for all it's worth wasn't really prudent. DC is feeling the brunt of it being new to the market.

I'm still sure it will get sorted out. They must have provisioned enough bandwidth for at least a set number of accounts to begin with. I think it just turned out to be more difficult to mange the service than they initially anticipated.

What happens to Cybersmart's current uncapped subscribers? Are they just going to drop us??? switch me back to my old 3gig rip off for R259??? with top-ups @ R70 a gig. If this is the case I will surely leave Cybersmart.

How many gigs per month have you been using on your uncapped account?
