R9 290 temps?

What's the ambient temp in the room though?

Send pic of the innards of your PC, lemme see what's going on here.

I have pics let me see if it's close enough or I'll take more:

Please ignore that Red SATA cable... I can't find a black one

The other exhaust fan is above the CPU cooler and one behind it. One exits on the top of the tower and one on the back. Air is pulled in from the front.

Is that 120mm fans? must be a real noisy case in general.

It looks a bit tight in my opinion, as in no space for air to flow smoothly.

What is your temperature like now?

I prefer big cases for my gaming machine, like the Coolermaster Sniper.

Yea, normal tower not one of those massive ones. I have 2x 120 fans and they are pretty quiet. I can hear the GPU fans when they start working overtime though. Think I'll add 2 fans to the front of the case to help with in take for the time being. If all else fails I'll maybe upgrade the tower. But I really like this one :o

Pitbull which case do you have again, make & model? What does the side panel look like?

Also when your GPU hits 71C what is your CPU temps (this is withe the side panel on)? 71C for that card is not that bad but maybe we can chill things down a bit.

Some cheap arse case. Raidmax Vortex.
It has a window on the side panel. The CPU I think touched 40 degrees when the GPU was hitting 71.

Now at Idle with me watching Netflix:

Lol come on dude, you have a high end graphics card with a crappy case that doesn't offer enough ventilation, imo.

Model# would help a lot so I can check out fan layout/configuration.

The GPU is dumping it's heat into the case and with the side panel open you would feel a higher temp below the gpu (psu, base of case zone) compared to above the GPU (MB) side when you stick your hand in there, is this correct?

If you have a fan mounting space at the base of the case you could add a fan there, another intake fan in the front. You could also turn your PSU around 180 degrees so it sucks in the warmer case air and expels it through the back, many people are against this and say you should isolate your heat sources but PC's with top mounted PSUs have been running like this since the beginning of time. If your side panel has vents mount extraction fans there.

The front of the case pops off and there are mounts there for 2 x 120mm fans. (I'll add those tomorrow)

The PSU is bottom mounted, vents in from the bottom and out the back. Wait maybe I can find a layout of the case somewhere online. That would help. brb.

I found a video of it on youtube.

Checked the video now and they not showing the front snapping off to add more fans. But that whole front of the case snaps off and on again.

I really don't feel that another fan would bring the temp of your GPU down that much. There is only so much that a fan can do.

AMD cards run much hotter than Nvidia cards under load and 71c is normal for such a high end card. Maybe you were just shocked to see the temp of such a card but what temp were you expecting?

I have never really focused on temps before. I was expecting it to hover around 60 degrees. Now that I saw it runs at around 94 I'm not too bothered. I think the fact that the poor GPU fans were making such a noise I got frightened a bit :o

Nope that's reserved for the green team :p

71C is not bad for that GPU. You could revisited this topic maybe in summer again an see if additional fans would help then. For now think of it as central heating :D

71 degrees is 100% fine.

AMD cards can handle high temps.

Do all radeon cards handle heat well?
What should my lower spec card sit at?

I've got a 6670 the asus one, usually sits at 50c
When gaming, 39-40 when idle,

No gaming case, but do got one of those slot fans just next to the card, everything stock otherwise.

It's perfectly fine, 50 degrees is practically nothing to a GPU.

It's a pretty old card though, what games are you playing?

I've owned many AMD cards and Nvidia cards in the past, all of them that were running too hot made it obvious that they were. If my GPU overheated my PC would either shut down or freeze during load. If nothing like this is happening and your temps seem fine then there's nothing to worry about.

My old HD4830 made it to what I believe was 97 degrees before my PC shut off. Apparently this is to prevent the GPU from damaging itself? Can't remember I was only 13 at the time.

Thanks,

I play everything perfectly well, maybe not on max settings, but as long as it runs, im quite happy,

What temp should I set my alarms on speedfan?

Idle:

Nvidia makes quality.

Do you even OC bro?

I was about to say 41 degrees idle was a bit high till I saw that OC, dang. Whats that, like 200mhz increase atleast over stock?

Stock core is 675 MHZ

But on a serious note, thats not my clocks (my GPU would have blown if i hit apply), my real clocks are:

1037mV
825 core
1650 Shader
2000 memory.

If it makes you feel any better, I had a R9 270x a while back that would reach 90C+ on demanding games... Your temps seem normal

Hey.

I use to get 94 degrees constantly under load, and that’s normal for the stock R9 290.

I changed the fan settings using MSI Afterburner and its running at 74 degrees now, and that’s the stock R9 290. Just change our fan settings and you should see a fairly big drop in temps
