At one point today my card was running at 71 degrees

I could hear the fans going insane in the case, opened the case for more air and it came down to about 55 degrees.

Add more fans? I got such a fright damn. Maybe invest in water cooling? I heard these cards run hot and are power hungry but damn 71 degree?

AFAIK, 75 degrees is the melting point for any AMD card. :D

On a serious note, remove that piss poor factory thermal paste and replace it with something decent.

So disassemble the back plate, add thermal paste and put it back? Won't this void the warranty? Card is brand new.

If it doesnt have a "void if removed" sticker then how will they know?

How is your case cooling? If it has poor ventilation then it will keep on cooling itself with hot air.

I don't think 71 is that bad.. If it gets over 80, maybe start worrying

I have 2 big exhaust fans and the whole front panel of the case is ventilated. Maybe I should add 2 more intake fans just to be sure. I figured there is enough breathing that exhaust fans only will do the trick. Guess not.

Yes, you need at least 1 fan in the front pushing in cool air.

PS: if I punish my 460 purrs at 91 degrees.

You mad? :p

Damn I nearly had a heart attack when I saw 71 degrees.
I'll add 2 intake fans for now and see how it does. It's winter imagine this thing in summer /shiver

In the 90's is very high I admit but AMD says it's normal for the R9 290, if you check online most 3rd party R9 290's do about 70-80°C.

What's the ambient temp in the room though?

Send pic of the innards of your PC, lemme see what's going on here.
