yet another example of a closed thread due to people not being able to handle race comments :erm:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?238215-Don-t-you-just-love-this-country

I dont understand why its a problem saying the people that stole the cables and burnt the trains are black people? Whats wrong with that?

I cant remember the last time I heard an Indian group burning a train? Can you? You know what... if that ever did happen I would say the same thing... DAMN INDIANS!!! :D Just happens to be a group of black people this time, in fact most of the time it is... strange... Does that make me a racist? :p

I dont have an issue with colour... I have an issue with people not using their logic and brains. If there are 10 news stories of people acting "retardation", and 8/10 stories are related to a specific race, well then straight away people are start wondering... Cant really blame you can them

I call a spade a spade, and if you cant handle that... Then what the hell is the point of freedom of speech? (hate speech is different, dont confuse the two)

If this post upsets you, I dont care. I'll probably get a warning for posting this, but people just ***** foot around these days and cant deal with any facts and truth... :(

cya! :D

P.S. If you Cape Town, enjoy the weather... Gonna be flippin freezing this weekend! :)

racial under tones were a bit heavy in that thread and very blatant IMHO.

it's one thing to debate an issue but another to use racial undertones to provoke a response.

big up to the mod who closed it

and that is what this is... a debate

its not a personal attack. if the shoe fits, wear it!!!

if it DOESNT, grab a beer!

The problem in that thread, HTC_guy, is that one person (later joined by many) started going on about how racist everybody is (admittedly, many had a hint of racism!), even mistaking harmless comments to be filled with racial overtone. This lead to name-calling and well... you can read the rest.

People just need to learn to take these discussions with a pinch of salt. We should be lucky to be in a society that tolerates (to some extent) many sensitive discussions without the fear of government recourse. These discussions can be handled in a mature manner but more often than not anything to do with politics and religion will get out of hand very quickly!

As for the weather - wish we had some COLD weather here for a change, you Cape Town guys are so lucky! :D

It also doesn't help the fact that all posts are simply text. The majority of communication involves tone of voice and physical actions when trying to get a point across.

So someone reading a response posted by another could read it completely out of context due to the fact that they aren't receiving that additional 70-80% of communication.

I agree, the only aid we have in trying to indicate tone are emoticons and these don't always do it justice.

The problem is that the persons race is irrelevant. Would it have been different if white people stole the cables? No, stealing is stealing. The problem is that people are stealing the cables - the racial profile of the people doing the stealing is irrelevant - by specifying it's black people implies that you see a connection between being black and stealing, which is racist. If there is no connection between being black and stealing cables then why mention it?

will you feel the same? "a black person saved a white child", or "a black person helped an old white lady"

will you feel more better than ... "a person saved a child", or "a person helped an old lady"?

;)

What is it you don't agree with in my previous post exactly?

I don't really understand what Dreamking is trying to say...
I think it would be better to say "Dreamking saved a little boy from drowning"
rather than saying "A white guy saved a little black boy from drowning" unless the persons race is actually relevant to the story.
For example, in our country it *might* be relevant to say a black person saved a white child *if the story is about interaction between the races*
- it would be like saying a german saved a jew from the nazi's...

In a story about stealing, race is irrelevant since we know that there are people across all race groups that steal and also that there are people across all races who are honest.
Race really is not relevant here.

I read somewhere that e.g. newspapers aren't allow to reveal the race of a person in the article? Is this fact?

When a cables are stolen, buildings burnt down, trains burns down, nobody is surprised to hear it's a group of Africans. Now let me tell you if a group of whites burn down a train or a school, I WILL be surprised.
