I rent a couple of dedicated servers from Hetzner in Germany. With the international internet outage, I’ve started thinking about hosting those servers locally. I’ve looked at rentals in SA but they are WAY too expensive. So I’m thinking of buying / building my own rack servers and having them hosted in a collocated rack with a local provider. So I have a couple of questions:
What are some of the other things that I need to consider? Any advice would be appreciated.
- I need 2x 1u racks, my main requirement is that it’s cheap, has minimum 200mbps Fibre, unlimited bandwidth, has a presence in Joburg. Who are the best providers for this?
- So far I’ve found Web Squad., R550 for 1u seems reasonable but they only provide 100mbps connection.
- I’ve built PC’s for over 20 years, so I’m well versed in PC building but I’ve never built a server, I’m guessing it’s similar. I’m thinking of building out the server myself but would be open to buying a pre-built server as well. Who are the best suppliers for this? These are the specs I’m looking at:
