Hi

I am curious if there is a sa based hosting company that offers managed rails hosting?

@JasonH

Thank you very much for you reply, do you support deployment via Phusion Passenger. I take it your Gem Support will give me the ability to manage custom gems?

Had a bad experience with them? Any word of warning would be appreciated as I'll need to look at Rail hosting in the not too distant future.

No, I've never used them... But they use FastCGI, which has become very old school and dated method of speeding up rails applications. I personally prefer Phusion Passenger aka mod_rails as it is far superior to both FastCGI and Mongrel

Aren't the 37Signals developers still deploying on Mongrel?

Edit:Yes they are. I don't mean to imply that all RoR developers should follow their approach. Just wondering aloud why they chose that route - a quick readup on Passenger does seem to indicate that it does have a lot of advantages.

Edit 2:Further searching reveals they've moved Ta-Da List onto Passenger so I guess it part of their big picture

Ta-da List has been running on Passenger since last year sometime... 37 Signals actually commissioned the developers of Passenger to make changes to Passanger for them.

Edit: what martin said

Well, as you can tell I'm still pretty new to RoR. Thanks for the thread - I've learnt something useful today. :)

Always a pleasure to share what I know...

I guess until a hosting company in SA supports Passenger, I have no choice but to stick with Dreamhost.

Have you tried asking Hetzner? They seem to be more accommodating than most, perhaps they could set something up for you?
