RAIN 5G Gauteng NSA or SA thread

Woke up this morning to a s#$t show, can only imagine someone did some optimization over the weekend :mad:
Every time I think that things are coming right RAIN supersizes me and totally messes things up again :mad::mad::mad:

Speed is now MAX 80 down and 17 UP

I'am so tired of this - fiber can't come soon enough :crying:

Morning @MikeTosen could you please provide me with the email address that is linked to your rain account let me take a look into this issue for you, which area do you stay in because I am not aware of any optimizations or changes that took place over the weekend. so if you could please PM me with the email address that is linked to your rain account then I can assist you further with this issue?

At least you are getting 80, we are using rain for our business, I have not seen 50mbps, so yes 80mbps would be awesome.

They restarted the tower, and changed a fibre cable, and a majority of the issues were resolved - speeds went back to normal. We moved the antenna to a different part of the roof because we are on the edge of the 45 degree coverage cone for the tower we connect to (this seems to matter more with SA mode). The system is much more stable now but it still drops connection - I'm not quite sure which of the coverage details causes this. I've provided them with feedback but I'm yet to hear back from them again. I'll let you know what sort of weird coverage issue is causing the issue when I hear back, hopefully it won't be too long from now.

This basically makes my old Huawei H112-370 CPE Pro useless for Rain network now since NSA is no longer supported. On a side note 4G still works on the 5G sim but I'm curious how it will work when the CPE is on 5G SA will it fall back to 4G if the 5G goes down during power cuts? My 5G tower goes down during loadshedding and always had 4G as backup. Slow around 10Mbps or so but still good enough to do something. What happens now on SA 5G?

Its still the h112-372 for me, must mean I'm unlucky
 
Not the most scientific study but below a sample of my average speeds split into different times since switch over to Gauteng SA network. Although there are signs of some "potential" DL speeds have not improved IMO. UL on the other hand has seen at least a 30-40% increase in my case. Connection is a lot more solid with signal quality with my setup in the low 70's.

Over last two weeks have noticed steady and notable decline in speeds as can be seen in graph. Also noticeable a clear pattern in peak and off peak times and its impact on speeds. As I have said and have been told by tech guys on the ground the RAIN network is saturated and it shows. Not one additional tower has being erected in my area in 11 months now.

To give some context, this time last year I was first in my area with RAIN 5G with sustained peak speeds of around 450Mbps.

I can pretty much concur from my own experiences - minus the congestion part. I was seeing peaks in the 500s on NSA with uploads in the low 10s of mbps. I have had a bunch of weird instability issues since the change to SA but these are being worked on. The SA change kept my download speeds around the same (a bit lower but generally more closely grouped), but the uploads have soared to above 100mbps most of the time. At first I saw highs and lows based on the network peak times but I have not seen many of those kinds of fluctuations more recently - apparently they have done a good few network improvements around me over the past few weeks.

Hopefully you are experiencing the benefit of some upgrades and optimization work that we are doing across the country.
 
Guys have any of you found a way to force a certain tower?

I got 2 towers in my area, but I can only connect to the fast one for maybe a minute and then it reverts because it has worse signal.

But it gets over 100mb/s in peak time, where the better signal tower suffers at 5mb/s.

Is there no tool I can use to ignore a tower?

RAIN is potentially the only entity that can do that for you.

The alternative would be to get a directional antenna and point it at the tower further away.

If the two towers are using different bands then you could try forcing the router to use the band of the other tower.

Most likely the same band, how do I change the 5g band though? I'm not at home currently but I don't remember seeing something like that.
 
From the conversations I have had with their technicians on this topic (I also hop between towers), they can lock you to a tower. Issue being that you're left with nothing if that tower goes down for some reason. I also believe it has to be done on their side. The tower closer to me is also slower generally but no matter where we position the CPE or how we configure it, we connect to the tower 150m away. It's an ongoing issue which doesn't seem to have a good solution.
 
I also have the same issue but the closer tower has good speeds it keeps on connecting to one thats almost 2kms away with usable speeds but bad pings. They called me on Saturday and manually put me on the tower thats closer, well that worked for a good 25minutes then poof back to the one.

Oh and the issue only started recently didn’t even know there was a tower in that direction, until ODU connected to it.think it started after the firmware update.

My issues also only began then. I have been in contact with them for the past three weeks or so now. A RAN support technician as well as three separate technical teams have come through over the weeks. Having the same people actually continue to respond to a ticket is another story (one of the people I dealt with is quite literally ignoring me) - I have been reset to level 1 support two or three times now and then the whole process starts again
