Hey guys,

Don't know if anyone has any suggestions because rain can't help me. I have a quite a few 5G towers around me. One 0.6km away, one 0.5km away and one 1.1km away. 2 of them i can see from my roof.

I had speeds of 200mbps download, 40mbps up with 19/20 ping everyday. 3 weeks ago at 10:00 at night, i was playing modern warfare. Had lag spikes and it jumps into 1000 ping. Went and did a speed test and cant even reach 5mbps down with 0.5mbps up and then 40 to 400 ping. Its still happening to this day. The router was mounted outside on the roof. I took it off the roof and now im getting 30 to 40 mbps where its mounted now on a wall next to the gate.

Zahir from rain called me on monday and tried to help me and it looked fine as i was getting 150mbps down with the normal 19/20 ping. He only told me to aim it into certain directions. After the call about 5 minutes later it started again. Lag spikes, speeds below 5mbps. I placed the router everywhere in my yard now with no better speeds.

On 192.168.8.1 it shows i have full 5G signal and full 4G signal. Even inside the house. I messaged the rain dude on here and he said he'll pass it over to someone. Then for 2 days straight the wifi didn't work and i came back on to ask him to cancel the 5G. When i cancelled my Telkom products atleast they tried to keep me by offering me better service and a better deal.

Played around in the router settings and changed the antenna to fixed, toggled the NSA thingy and locked to 5G option. The wifi works fine for 5 minutes then i have to reset the router because it doesn't work.

Complaints have been lodged at ICASA, ISPA and NCC. The ICASA complaint worked so far as they called me a week later after i lodged the complaint but the Rain rep said i was overshooting my tower by 25km? How am i overshooting the tower by 25km and still get full 5G signal? I told the Rain rep lets give it a week and she has to call me back so we can fix it. Still no call.

Does someone know of any settings i can change in the router setting?

Have someone i can call to come out and fix it?

I know it wont be cancelled because it takes them ages to come back to me.

I have fibre in my complex but will only be active end of August.

Hey there Buddy, do you by any chance know someone with Huawei CPE Pro router. A friend of mine had the same issue. We removed his Sim and placed it into my CPE Pro the results were chalk and cheese. His currently trying to get a CPE Pro. PS this is just worth a try as he is the only person i have assisted with that has a similar issue as yours.

Unfortunately i don't know anyone with that router. I got this deal 2 weeks before lockdown and they only had this all scenario CPE.

Just checking if you have factory reset the router? Like back to the settings it had when you got it? Then maybe try setting it up again?

Hey, just reset it back to factory again. Trying it indoors now. Still the same problem. 25mbps down, 0.2 mbps up with 220 ping

Its indoors now, getting 30 to 35mbps down and 7 up. Ping still jumps around between 30 to 40. In my case, im getting better results lower to the ground, inside the house than outside. But im on the premium so still not getting more than 100mbps download.

Can you see which tower it is connecting to or is it jumping from tower to tower?

Sorry didn't tag you in the screenshot. Is it the cell ID im looking at? If the number changes, the tower changes?

yes - if the cellID changes, the number will change, Try also checking on your optimiser on rain.co.za - it shows a graphical view of the tower close to you as well as the one you're connected to - something like this

You can then point it in the general direction of the closest tower (s) and also when you do the antenna thing you can align them to those towers as well

Just an update. I placed the router in the middle of the house. Im now getting 150mbps download, 7mbps up with 20 ping. Internet is stable INSIDE the house.

Possibility the router is cancelling out the weaker signals and latching onto the stronger one

So this afternoon everything went downhill again. Getting ping over 999 and speeds of 0.1 down and 0.6 up. Not better oustide or anywhere inside. The optimizer showed tower marked with red as my current site a few days ago but its not showing my current site anymore. The rain rep on konday told me tower marked as purple is the anchor tower and tower marked green is a newish tower that was put up somewhere before lockdown. So I've given up now. I have towers so close to me so dont understand what the problem could be. Or im being throttled or theres some tower congestion. They took payment a few minutes ago so it has not been cancelled.

I think your case is a prime example of tower flipping that was mentioned here. If you had the functionality to tie the CPE to the red or purple tower then it would be better I think

Does setting your antenna index not help in fixing it to a tower based on direction? The fact you were able to get 150 mbps from inside the house shows the signal is there and is strong - did you happen to take note of which CellId was active at this time?

I get similar results also with the CPE indoors and my closest tower is 610m away

Hi,

Yes i did fix the antenna in the settings. I think the only option is to wait on the complaints i laid at ICASA, ISPA and NCC.

Ok cool - sorry mate - this situation sucks. also hope the reps here can at least start a process to resolve the issues.
