Rain and storm for Cpt

According to the DWA data (unverified), the Berg River Dam just started overflowing (12 noon on Tues 23rd). At 6am this morning it was 95% full, so that's a jump of 5% in 6 hours. See: http://www.dwa.gov.za/Hydrology/Unverified/DetailStageFlow.aspx?Station=G1R004FW&Type=Flow&Rain=N

Edit: The inflow into the Berg River Dam this morning was astonishing: http://www.dwa.gov.za/hydrology/Unverified/DetailStageFlow.aspx?Station=G1H076FW&Type=Flow&Rain=N

Edit: The peak rate of 180m^3/sec or 650,000m^3/hr represents an entire day's consumption for the City of Cape Town in one hour!

No wonder the CoCT overcharge us/get their stats wrong. Yesterday (Monday) was the 22nd. :)

No prob Gordon. I enjoy your insight into that which I have an interest. Used to contribute to PP**** also, but got shot down due my comments about weather changes after AF 447.Tks for the edit.

Back on topic. I'm in Parow, Bellville side. Lots of wind (still) and rain has tapered. My humble garden is happy.
 
@Gordon_R you have a rain gauge.. is that store bought or home made..?

I am interested in buying or making one but, not having luck on either fronts.. mind sharing details on yours..?

Seven homes were destroyed by an uprooted tree in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, as a cold front slammed into Cape Town on Monday night.

The City's disaster risk management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said no injuries had been reported as a result of the incident.

About 3 000 dwellings in the area - as well as the informal settlements in Masiphumelele and Makhaza - were affected.

Strong winds damaged roofs in Mamre, Strand, Gugulethu and Belhar, while flooded roads have been reported in a number of areas - Southfield, Grassy Park, Killarney, Kraaifontein, Atlantis, Hout Bay, Kuils River, Mitchells Plain, Macassar, Parow and Durbanville - Powell said.

Storm-related electricity disruptions were also being experienced in Plattekloof and Rylands.

"City departments are assisting the affected communities, including making alternative accommodation available and SASSA has been informed about the need for humanitarian relief," Powell said.

Seems to be all the stations. I was driving through a rainstorm on the N1 close to Plattekloof when there was a bright flash of lightning and then the radio died :(

One of my former neighbours bought the gauge a few years ago. A simple plastic one, possibly from a garden center (Stodels?), which I inherited it when she moved out. The only downside is that the maximum capacity is 30-40mm, which can easily be exceeded in a big storm. No point in trying to make your own (I did when I was a teenager), since there are so many sources online.

I forgot to post the SAWS rainfall figures (up to 8am on Tues 23rd), but apart from areas close to the mountains, they were somewhat disappointing: http://www.weathersa.co.za/images/data/climate/nr_daily_rai.pdf

Highest include Kirstenbosch 70mm, Villiersdorp 44mm, Jonkershoek 35mm, Paarl 30mm, Bellville 29mm, Grabouw 21mm, etc. By contrast CT airport had 11mm, though some rain did fall after 8am.

N.B. The extraordinary figures for the mountain catchments (150mm+ for Dwarsberg) indicate orographic effects, enhanced by the strong winds.

Typical plastic gauge available at builders or other hardware stores will measure up to 100 mm. That is good enough for most simple applications. Even Supermarkets like the hypermarket have them.
