Rain and storm for Cpt

So backyard meteorologists, how many mm rain fell over Cape metro and outlying areas...

I'm guessing a good few mm... maybe 10+ in some parts over last 36 hours.

heard a drip in my bedroom last night every minute and that hardly ever happens :thumbsup:

My first post yesterday morning on this thread reported 26mm in Kenilworth (up to 7.30am). The rest of the day was much less rainy, though there were some brief intense showers. Thunder and lightning was observed late yesterday evening (11pm), notably over Somerset West.

As always the rainfall from cold fronts is heavily affected by orographic effects from Table Mountain, and it is very hard to generalise. The main storm passed to the south of CT, and the West Coast probably received the least rain in the Metro area.

Edit: Another 12.5mm in the gauge in Kenilworth at 7.30am, total of 39mm in 36 hours.

Before anyone asks, it will be several weeks before the dams start filling, since soil-moisture is very low, and runoff will be limited.

Edit: Another front will brush the coast on Thurs 28th, bringing moderately heavy rain to the SW-Cape only.

17 mm Vredekloof CT.
Not directly CT related but does show the extent of the current system.
Light snow falls in high lying areas in the Hanover district. Very cold. Snow not collecting on ground however.
Temp in PTA is dropping despite it being a sunny day.

Snow reports. Matroosberg is the most accessible. Still mostly overcast today.

On Tuesday, snowfall was expected to spread to the central and northern interior of the Eastern Cape, while "bitterly cold daytime temperatures" set over the interior, including the Cape provinces, Free State and southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Got completely soaked taking out the bins. No dog walking this morning! 5mm in gauge in Kenilworth up to 7am.

Edit: 25mm in gauge up to 1pm. Much less away from the mountains, mainly orographic effect.

Edit: Another 13mm this morning, 38mm in 24 hours!

Dwarsberg/Jonkershoek station had 95.88mm yesterday. Currrently sitting on approx. 45mm. Quite amazing what a few decent days of rain can make to a monthly total. :-)
YTD approx. ~50mm behind 2019 and ~240mm behind 2018. That said 2019 was highest year in last 6 with ~2903mm.
 
The SAWS figures show that only areas near the mountains received significant rainfall. That is typical of a weak but slow moving and persistent front, where most of the precipitation is orographic, not showers: https://www.weathersa.co.za/images/data/climate/nr_daily_rai.pdf

Highest include Kirstenbosch 72mm, Paarl 57mm, Jonkershoek 39mm, Franschhoek 35mm, etc. By comparison Cape Town W/O (airport) received 19mm, and Malmesbury only 3mm.
