The driving was even worse today, I kept my distance though, did not want to get run over. Was a nice ride though. I feel had for those food delivery scooters though, that can't be a nice job in this weather. Add to then they seem to go for cheap nylon gear which gets soaked rather quickly.
 
Update. Significant inflow (100m^3/sec) into the Berg River Dam yesterday afternoon (Sat 27th), though tapering off overnight. The total level is up about 6% in the last 48 hours:

Banhoek Conservancy in Kylemore (area feeding Berg River system I guess) is super wet this morning. My boots have not looked this muddy...ever. Also not fun finding out that the goretex membrane has failed in the middle of a stream crossing. :)

Update on the storm damage. We managed to contact the owner of the garage, found no substantial damage, and made temporary repairs.

I collected most of the pieces of the tank lid, and found they weighed in excess of 26kg. How a 1.2m disc managed to get airborne is still hard to believe!?

While we had some strong winds and flooding across the Cape, I only measured 51mm across the two days.
Good rain and welcome thank you, but the way people report on social media you would think we were hit by a huge storm.
What I see is blocked drains, broken branches and the odd tree that falls over is fairly normal for the Cape Winter weather.
The South Easter can blow a gale, yet the trees seem used to it, but let it blow a strong North Westerly and we have damage to property and trees.

Lol, a couple of trees fall over in CPT, and everyone freaks out. Keegan then marks himself as "safe" on Facebook during the storm.

Meanwhile in JHB/PTA half the province is under water with and flooding every Jan to March, with severe hail damage and lightning damage too... and they carry on as usual and still braai that afternoon. :ROFL:

There's this eNCA report of mass flooding and destruction, and the only thing they can show is the same tree that's been posted over social media over and over. They even report from that tree!


Cape Town is definitely not used to storms we used to have. This is just a standard winter front - and we need more fronts!

Look, I'm VERY grateful for the rain, and want more of it! But the continual bombardment on facebook and whatsapp msgs of people driving through some water and a tree in Wynberg that fell over is hardly news... Calling it a massive storm!

Then you get those (Richard, I'm talking to you if you read this) that post videos over and over from June 2017... :rolleyes:

Council had the trees cut up yesterday before 6.00, when it gets dark

Last storm a few years back, the steel roof of a garage flew through the air and hit my solar water heater and roof. About R32k damage

This time nothing to speak of

It's like you're not aware we've all been at home for the last 3 months with nothing much to see. Even a fallen tree is exciting now!

26kg weight for 1.2m diameter disc would equate to about 200 N/msq.

Looking up that on a chart for wind load means a wind speed of 20m/s would be enough to lift and flip the lid off, which is 72 km/h thereabouts.

Nothing if what we heard is correct that the wind was gusting up to 100 - 150 km/h in CT.
