How cold has this winter been compared to the worst on record?I'm pretty sure there was (slightly) more in August 2003. See my photo album: http://capetownskies.com/2108/early_aug03.htm and http://capetownskies.com/1978/aug_sep03.htm

And if you only based it on the cold days? Its very hard to generalise, and this winter has had several sunny and dry weeks, so its mostly average.

That melted very quicklyFew snow flakes fell near Maclears around 10:30 this morning. Still a few patches of snow and boardwalks a bit spicy

Yeah, I haven't really felt it this year. I judge every year on the number of times I put my heater on in the lounge, this year it's still zeroIts very hard to generalise, and this winter has had several sunny and dry weeks, so its mostly average.
We got hit at 11am with a shower passing by, luckily it was halfway up the jeep track at Constantia Nek and we found a big tree to cover us and wait for it to pass, 15 minutes later we were back on the road hiking again bone dryIts raining again (11am on Sun 30th), not what I expected!? Temperature on top of Constantiaberg is 4.6C.
@Papa Smurf is not going to be having fun on the mountain...
Edit: The outlook for the next few days is very mixed, with a well developed cutoff-low positioned along the southern Cape coast. Note that these kind of systems are very unpredictable, and it is difficult to forecast the position and amount of rain in advance:
