Coming down in buckets for the last 3 hours here in Strandfontein.

Several hours of moderately heavy rain in Kenilworth. Easing off a bit at 3:30am. SE wind still howling...

Edit: Load shedding over here. Didn't feel like walking down 3 flights of slippery stairs in the dark to read the rain gauge. 17mm in gauge up to 4am, still light rain.

Slight wind blowing here where I live, not gusting anymore.
20 minutes of loadshedding left, thank goodness for inverter to keep the lounge going, as well as all the outside lights.

This happens every few years. I remember Christmas 2002 being cold, wet and miserable. Even a light dusting of snow on Table Mountain.

I am more a summer guy, love my winter hibernation cycle - but need bit more sun to prep for our winters... last winter was on the same level we use to get back in the day.... the 1980s...

was thinking back -- can not recall it being this cold , wet and miserable... for such a long spell in Dec, sure would have rain at Christmas...but this is just bloody unusual...upside garden and our dams are loving this.

Peak temperatures always come after the longest days (at least in the Cape), and the wind also subsides, and February is usually the warmest month. The main reason is that the sea surface takes time to warm (due to the higher heat capacity of water), and coastal effects stabilise.

P.S. I actually prefer autumn weather.

We had one warm day in October (I think). It must be summer, the Xmas decorations are up in the shops... /s

Only 6mm in Bellville.

Friend's family farm north of Victoria West had 84mm so far. And more rain forecasted for today there. Their previous recorded high was 52mm over 2 days. Crazy videos coming out of that area. Thankful after 8 years of drought but this is getting a bit extreme now.

Cape Town is clearing this morning, but the cutoff-low will have widespread effects over the rest of the country today and tomorrow (Sun 5th and Mon 6th).

climate change is becoming really evident for me

I think we need to get off our high horse as humans and realise that the earth has and always will be changing between extremes for millions of years. It's us humans that doesn't like the idea of climate change yet it's going to happen eaither way.

Anyways, I think the current rainy weather in the Southern hemisphere is due to all the volcanic activity this year up in the Northern hemisphere. Have a look at Australia, they are also having abnormally wet weather this time of year.

My dad reported 17mm for Betty's Bay from 20:00 to 08:00 and it's still raining there.

You can see the lows circulation quite nicely today on the satellite image (and the storms over the karoo)
