Rain and storm for Cpt

Has felt like the mildest winter in a few years. Be interesting to see some average temp comparisons to previous years.

I agree subjectively, though average temperatures alone only tell part of the picture. If it is a sunny day, then you can be outdoors with less clothing. Clear skies can produce very cold overnight temperatures, but most of us are only active during daytime. Wind speeds also make a big difference, and this whole year has been rather calm.
 
There was some rain overnight, followed by a brief downpour around 8am which caused localised puddles. It looks a bit drier now, with about 8mm in our gauge in Kenilworth so far. Temperatures have taken a sharp drop, and are likely to remain low until Sun 31st.

Edit: Another 4mm in our gauge between 9am and 11am. Managed to dodge some heavy showers.

Next week looks mostly mild and dry, with some rain likely on Thurs 4th.

Sporadic brief showers here past Fish Hoek since 8am, clearing and then overcast... Much heavier rain during early morning hours...
 
I’ve noticed indoors where I have a thermometer that I monitor that sometimes 16deg feels balmy and other times positively frigid and that’s not because the temps are plummeting and I’m just catching it as it drops, it’ll be consistently at 16deg for hours.
What causes that?

My theory is the amount of water vapour in the air affects the degree to which the ambient conditions can strip heat from your body, so high vapour levels in the air feels colder because jt chills you faster than drier air.

Humidity makes for temperatures feeling warmer but also colder. I remember not getting cold on a dry 0 degrees sunny day in Gauteng, then flew to the rainy Cape and froze my moobs off at 14 degrees, but it was humid and windy.

Metabolism and activity levels are the biggest factors in determining comfort levels, and are both subjective and hard to measure. As seasons change your body adapts to the temperature that it expects, and clothing also makes a big difference.

You can accept a temporary shift in body temperature for a few minutes while active, but will become very uncomfortable if low or high temperatures persist. This is a natural defence mechanism, but doesn't make you a wimp if you choose shelter.

That’s the exact thing I’m referring to, even when out of the wind the coldness can have a bite to it that far exceeds the temperature reading.

I thought about that and that can’t be the reason, I’ll notice the bite in the air even after a hot shower or dressing warmer and even after many hours, if it was my bodies fluctuating response then once my body temps stabilised the ambient temps would feel less cold but they don’t.
 
The higher the relative humidity, the more you feel the temperature.

That’s what I’d expect but is that a fact whether it’s hot or cold?

Also obviously the colder air gets the less water vapour it will hold due to more condensation occurring but what it will hold I’m assuming will still have far greater capacity to chill you to the bone than dry cold air at the same temps.
