This is one of the worst case scenarios I can imagine. Google Maps shows nearest detour is via Swartrivier Road (about 15km). Pretty sure the provincial traffic department will be on the scene soon, with route signs posted in a day or two. Going via Hermanus or Villiersdorp look rather long (but more scenic?)
 
Rain seems to have finally stopped here by me. What an epic stretch of heavy rain. I know a lot of people are suffering, but I truly expected the outcome to be a lot worse after listening to hours and hours of this downpour.

My concern is the diesel cost with detours, with another potential R2+ hike looming.. also, we need to be in bredasdorp rather early too, so detours would also mean leaving 4am..

The normally wet suburbs of Cape Town (edit: Newlands and Claremont) escaped the worst of the storm, and are no more affected than a normal cold-front (although wind directions were reversed from NW to SE). We had about 55m in our gauge in Kenilworth, which is not exceptional. I managed to walk the dog in Rondebosch between 10 and 11am.

The worst flood damage was in the Overberg, with south and east facing areas collecting the worst of the runoff, including orographic effects on mountain slopes. The SAEON Dwarsberg (Jonkershoek) mountain catchment recorded 160mm up to midnight (Sun 24th), and appears to have reached an equal amount up to midday today (Mon 25th). That is a huge amount of water (300mm in 24 hours)!

The cutoff-low is gradually moving eastwards, but will only move offshore tomorrow (Tues 26th).

We have one road closed that is currently being undermined by a flooding creek.. not normal for a standard cloudfront..

Somebody posted on a local (to my area) WhatsApp group that they recorded 95mm of rain in the last 24 hours. This is in Plattekloof 2.
 
Saw a video now of a golden arrow bus that overturned, on its side with people trapped between the road and the bus, bit grim. Not sure if it was the wind or the cause of it.

In the old days we used to have double decker buses in Cape Town. Those were not ideal in windy conditions...
