Rain and storm for Cpt

Freakishly warm, 29C at CT airport at 12noon on Wed 29th! NW wind should pick up later, ahead of the cold-front tomorrow. Light drizzle is likely from midnight onwards, but proper rain is only likely for a few hours from daylight onwards (during the morning). Thereafter rain will be quite scattered at times.

Edit: Seems to be a grass fire somewhere in the Mowbray/Maitland area, lots of smoke haze around.

I believe it's actually on the west coast, the wind is blowing it pretty far.
 
Absolutely bucketing down in Kenilworth between 6am and 7am!? Felt very sorry for the cleaners who arrived at our building in the rain...

SAEON Dwarsberg mountain catchment station reports 11mm during the last hour!

Edit: 45 minutes break, followed by a very heavy shower. It's going to be one of those weather events...

Been bone dry since 8am here Sea Point side....far less rain than forecast. Was expecting at least some scattered showers during the day as the front passed over...
There hasn't been a what I classify as a continuous, sustained downpour in months this side of mountain.

SAEON Dwarsberg (Jonkershoek) mountain catchment station recorded 60mm yesterday (Thurs 30th). There was plenty of rain, just not on your side of the city...

Highest include Villiersdorp 21mm, Ceres 18mm, Grabouw 17mm, Tulbagh 15mm, Citrusdal 14mm, etc.

The temperature at an elevation of 1200m is down to 3.0C this morning, so a light dusting of snow is possible on the higher peaks in the SW-Cape.

The effects of the cutoff-low seem likely to mostly to miss Cape Town itself, though there will be plenty of rain inland and further east.

VOX's weather reports are insanely good - such detailed information;


I'm assuming they are getting the same high-end weather models from the SA Weather Service that SABC and would ETV use.

Point taken, but I wouldn't give much credit to the mythical excellence of the SAWS. Global and commercial services underly most modern forecasts. Slick editing makes up the rest.

Was just wondering. Most of SAWS's detailed forecasts are behind paywalls - they're obviously paying for it. I mean the SAWS has weather stations, balloons and doppler radar all over the country. No free satellite stream will give you access to that kind of granular information... Either way, their forecasts are great for an accurate nutshell of a daily weather report.

I embrace this chill, no longer needing to crawl into the refrigerator. The cold is more to my liking. Next week I will be on the road which is the only downside to the improving weather conditions. I just find it challenging to acclimate to hot weather.

Yip, and I prefer their format. The weather reports on TV don't give us this information.

Its like old school weather reports with some flash.

You are mistaken, particularly about the difference between data gathering and forecasting. Balloons are launched twice daily from a handfull of locations. There are no doppler radars (except OR Tambo). Neither are critical to long-term forecasts. The same hourly data from stations that you refer to, are supplied to multiple international partners in terms of WMO agreements.

Most weather nowadays is measured by satellites, of which SA has effectively zero. Weather patterns move with time, predominantly from west to east, so conditions over CT (such as rainfall and wind) are irrelevant to the next 6-18 hour forecast.

All forecasts are based on numerical weather predictions run on computers, and the international ones are the biggest and best. The SAWS mostly uses the same model outputs as other forecasters, it doesn't have it's own unique special technology.

P.S. Short term aviation forecasts are different, but that is not the scope of general weather.
