Hi All,

Please forgive my ignorance when it comes to wireless stuff, I'm an old-school nerd lol. Hopefully somebody can help me out here.

I got my Rain SIM about 2 months ago and set it up in my Huwawei B525s - 65a router. It was amazeballs, I was getting up to 3.5MBps download speed at peak, averaging at about 1.5MBps though.

After about 2 weeks it started misbehaving; the router started switching between connections randomly, as if switching between 4G and 3G/2G. When the router had full signal(according to the LEDs), the connection was really slow, as in 100kBps download at peak. Then the LEDs would lose a bar and download speeds increased to ~2MBps again. Now I can't even get Google to open at times it's so bad. I tried every combination of connection type and tower available in the manual settings but I have yet to succeed. Has anyone got an idea what the problem is? How can I get the stupid thing to stay on the faster 4G connection?

Any help would be appreciated. Oh, BTW, I created a support ticket and got nowhere.

Lastly: I remember the CellC Speed sticks a few years back: 3G @ 21MBps. My question is this: Is Rain 4G really 4G? 10MBps is half the speed of a good 3G connection? Just for curiosity's sake...

Rain is 4G and 5G only, they do not have a 3G/2G/GSM component like the other networks. So your router is staying on LTE. Likely either poor signal or network congestion. Post your router stats here and we can see what it might be.

3.5mbps is nothing to be excited about though

The R479 package is limited to 10mbps up and down.

I am on the R250 package 4G. I complain to Rain almost daily about my speed. It's up and down from 0 Mbs to if I am lucky 2 Mbs. Rain doesn't respond to my complaints. Do not get Rain, they are the worst. My MTN LTE runs between 50 and 100 Mbs. which I use as failover. Of cause like now Rain is unusable and I have to use my MTN which is much more expensive. I guess cheap is what it is, just cheap and useless.

What device are you using to connect? Same device for MTN?

Have you checked which tower you are connecting to via the optimiser tool on the website? And assuming your router placement is somewhere with reasonable view of outside, eg, near a window?

Maybe @rain_mobile @rain_networks can help here.

Yes. My nearest tower is 460 meters. In the beginning I got 15 Mbs and up (download) Ping was 19. It is still in the same location. Then it deteriorated. Like this morning it was 0.7 Mbs then went up to about 6 Mbs for a few minutes, then dead for about 15 minutes. My MTN runs 50 to 100 Mbs. Rain said I am connected to the wrong tower I must give them 3 days to rectify it. Never heard from them again. That's about 2 months ago. It's clearly some technical issue or throttling goin on. PS. Tested again. Put the router in the window sill. It started at 10 Mbs, then dips to 0.7 Mbs then dead. Okkla states: Network error.

So this was my first night on RAIN.
I've got the 7 day uncapped trial on the card. I signed up for the 23:00 to 18:00 package.

It's horrible. Terrible. Worse than 384Kbps ADSL in the 2000's.

I have 4 bars full signal, so it's definitely not signal related.
Browsing is borked, I can't even stream Spotify.
Try downloading? Be prepared to wait 10 minutes for a 5MB file.

I'm not here to crash on the parade or be negative just because I can.

This network is stuffed. The congestion is just unbelievable.

I'm sticking to my Telkom LTE for now, until RAIN sorts themselves.

This is my situation right now. Kids are complaining they cant watch Netflix and I am battling to open emails.....

Cant wait to get my fibre line installed....... Rain doesnt seem to want to sort out their congestion issues but are happy to sign on more subscribers and advertise on heavy rotation on Youtube......

Have you considered using @sherewarrior to look at your rain connection?

He is a google certified rain technician and can probably sort this out for you chop chop.

I am happy to assist, as for Google, not sure where the troll is heading with this.

Hi,

not sure if you have already tried it, there is a band tool for Huawei routers.
Try to force the router to band 38 or 41 if available. These two bands offer better download speed.
Also check the signal stats you are getting.

I hope the tool helps improve your net a bit

You may download a graphical software to monitor the router here .
