Rain is SLOW!

I live in Hermanus. Got the R250 per month (19 hours) package sim with a new Huawei LTE router
Got download speeds of around 1,00 to 1,20 mbps downloads

Then I installed a Poynting LTE high gain antenna which I ordered from Geewiz and it suddenly jumped up to around 12 mbps constantly. Sometimes dipping to around 7,5 mbps, but going straight up again.
The antenna was installed to the roof of my house and is pointing into the general direction of the celltower.
The biggest challenge was finding out where exactly the tower was located.

With this speed of 12mbps and R250 per month, I really cannot moan.
Capital layout was R1300 for the router and R1300 for the antenna (price has now increased)

I'm glad your problem is fixed, luckily you could afford the extra costs.

I'm of the opinion that, when a service provider advertise a package for R479 per month with a speed of 10mbps that is what i expect to get. (With ups and downs, as you ooint out).

If i don't get what's been promised there's three choices:

1. Shut my mouth and pay for nothing.

2. Insist on getting what was promised. (Then the provider has to supply an antenna if needed or make a plan to provide what was promised).

3. Cancel the service and move on.

In my case, i did not shut my mouth. Did not buy an antenna (can't afford it in any case) but seeked help.

I did not get any help so i've cancelled the sim card.

Only then i received a message from Rain via Broadband asking my email address so that my issue could be investigated. (This morning).

By the way, i still don't get a speed faster than 2mbps.

Same set up here, current convenient location of the poynting gets us 50-70mbps, in it's optimal spot which we haven't yet run cabling for, it pulls a solid 80mbps. router is b618 and the antenna is xpol-6

While I was talking to support, they asked me to do a speedtests. I noticed that they did not give the same results each. Is there a possible reason for this wide difference to the different speedtests?

Fast.com is a netflix service and is shaped at the moment.
Not sure why the mybb one is acting up.

They have the best and cheapest LTE deals on the market and I think they have too many subscribers accessing at once and they don't have the capacity to handle everyone at once. I have the new 4G uncapped 24/7 package and I see a signal strength improvement from 6pm to 11pm when most of the R250 per month 4G clients are inactive...

So it really does look like that they cannot handle everyone at once... Or they just messing around...

At least they can explain themselves which is all that we ask from them...

We might not be that angry they way we are now...

To avoid that congestion, we use an antenna and point toward a 2600 band tower. Speeds always consistent. Not everywhere has those towers though

I usually bitch a moan about Rain ...so yesterday their top customer support guy Faiz called me and we discussed my issues over a 20 minute phone call...they called me back after i left a ticket at their support site....magically overnight all my speeds are up and 5g CPE is working like the day they installed it i average 200-250 Mbps and my other complaint upload speed was fixed...Rain can fix things when there on the right program amazing how when things just work there are no complaints.:)

Please can you direct your customer support guy to these threads where for the majority, it is a constant struggle.
Maybe he can take some notes, pick up some patterns and escalate the common ones to the networks team so something can be done about it.

@Romito

For reference, fast.com with vpn:

and fast.com without vpn:

Both tested right now on 250pm package.

On the other hand, speedtest.net is not shaped seemingly, and I get better speeds there without a vpn.
Today It's 45mbps, a little slower than our usual which can go as high as 60-80.

Thirdly, I'd like to comment on the fact that not all routers even support the 2600TDD band, if you are looking at getting a setup that will undeniably get you a satisfactory experience on rain 4g if the infrastructure is in your area, grab a b618, and an xpol-6 Poynting antenna, then mess around with it for hours on end until you find the perfect areas for it to be. Ideally, attach it to a pole or tall lampstand and move that around.
My speeds remain the same with or without a VPN @ghostbunny
