Hallo Afrihost people,

The last couple of months I cannot stream dstv anymore (live tv, catchup etc.). The page loads, but I cannot play any videos, it is almost as if the internet connection fails to respond mid way through attempting to establish the connection between the server.

I have found a temporary workaround, however, I'm hoping for a more permanent solution. Keep in mind that I had no problems since Novermber 2017, I haven't changed any settings, my signal remains stable as always, the problem only started about two months ago.

If I connect my computer to the internet through a different connection (in my case I simply connected through a wifi hotspot on my phone), and load the DSTV streaming page and play the video, then pause, disconnect from my mobile hotspot, reconnect the Rain wifi, and play the video, it works. So it appears that the Rain connection only somehow fails to launch / load the initial player and stream, but thereafter it works perfectly. Obviously I don't want to connect to computer to a mobile hotspot every time I want to stream DSTV.

Do you have any advice on how I can fix this, or can you please escalate the problem to DSTV? I thought it was a DSTV problem, but seeing that it only happens with the Rain connection, the problem must surely be with Rain?

Kind regards,
Lourens

Hi Lourens, thanks so much for this post. It's definitely concerning - I would also be pretty bleak in your situation :(

This is the first report that I have seen of this error. We'll do our best to replicate on our side, but I'm surprised we haven't received more reports.

It sounds like it could be a DNS issue, but it might be something local that we can fix with DNS flush or removing any static DNS that might be on the device. Have you checked if you have any settings like this?

Hi Lourens.

I had the exact same problem with also getting to the exact same kick-start solution as yourself - before I noticed your post the other night. I didn't think that Afrihost (my isp) or Rain was at fault as the same wifi data used for streaming worked on my DSTV Now app, but not for the website. Also, Showmax worked perfectly.

I decided to tweet DSTV about it. After a few exchanges and screenshots about my findings, which included resetting my password, cleaning cookies as well as sending them this particular post and explaining that I get the same results with the kick-start, I left it as is and did their survey.

I noticed today that live streaming is working form scratch again - without the kick-start.

I suspect that DSTV is testing their imminent online packages and just neglected to switch on the Rain - yes just like here in Cape Town.

Hope your DSTV streaming service has been switched on, if not try a few of the above suggestions or else contact them.

Kind Regards,
BW

Thanks for the tips - will definitely also bear this in mind ;)

Happend to me aswell... However, I only had to "jumpstart" it once with my hotspot. After that it loaded fine on its own.

Thanks for the feedback AfriMan and BatWayne (and congrats on the post BatWayne!).

My streaming also seems to be working fine without a 'jumpstart' since this weekend. BatWayne it also used to work on my phone but not the the computer - so I deleted my cookies and reset my browser settings and all that, but nothing worked at that stage.

If the problem pops up again I'll try resetting the DNS as well.

That's great to hear! :) If there is any change, please let me know!
