Rain routing issue

So I have been a Rain fixed LTE user for about a year now. Since about mid week last week I started experiencing problems accessing a few different websites as well as using certain programs that require access to the internet. I have tried numerous different tests and it seems that Rain may have routing issues, am I the only one. Here is what I tried:

  • Pinged servers I am having issues with via Rain - in most cases there are no responses from the said servers. When I use my ADSL and other LTE provider, the servers are fine.
  • Speed tests are good.
  • Using a VPN whilst using Rain gets a positive response from the servers.
  • Signal is good.
  • Tested from two different locations within 8km of each other.

Has anyone experienced similar issues and what did you do?

Dont know what happened last week, but I had trouble accessing any Internet on Thursday eve (23rd), since then my Netflix and other general internet access has been quite intermittent.

Also Netflix bombs out a few times before it gets going.

Did you report it, what did they say? I'm interested to see if you get the same generic replies I do.

Seem like they routing all traffic via West Indian Ocean Cable Company - I've done tests all over the world and all seems to route via a West Indian Ocean Cable Company server. Maybe that's where the issue is.

I'm sure you have switched your dns to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 or 9.9.9.9 and see if it makes a difference?

Thanks, I've changed the DNS, it certainly seems to be making a difference. Let me test it throughout the day. Thank you!

Same issue here, using 1.1.1.1 doesn't help but a VPN did allow me on the one site that was misbehaving.

I've logged a ticket, maybe do the same with the sites you have issues with so they can see it's more widespread.

Update: It seems to work at times but there definitely seems to be a problem. I play have also noticed it with a particular MOBA I play where the chat function doesn't seem to work.

I had numerous DNS issue this last week. Used google, cloudflare their own DNS all the same. Also I see that uploads have been throttled to 3Mbs or thereabouts, where at the beginning of the month it was closer to 10. I think they having capacity issues.

Have you played between the 1800 & 2600 band to see if that affects the upload throughput ?

Also in Centurion, been like this for a few nights now but only on the Afrihost Rain, direct Rain is relatively fast when I switch over.

If somebody could explain these traceroutes to me I would be very thankful, it (to my eye) seems google is bypassed (ie not counted as usage) while other sites need to get to Afrihost before moving on( for billing I assume), and Afrihost seems slow or down.

^^^
I posted this on another thread, but it seems more relevant here
. These are the same sites now using the Rain mobile sim.

There is really something wrong with the fixed LTE.

Also been having issues lately, especially with Netflix. I'll try changing the DNS and see if it helps, thanks.

I've tried OpenDNS and Google. Honestly dont think it's a DNS issue. Netflix has become a real pain, it is almost unusable, but during the day it's fine. Seems like if you actually get a show to start playing, it will be ok (mostly), but often it just sits buffering and goes nowhere.

At night often basic webpages just plain fail.

For me, last week Thursday(23rd) seemed to be the turning point, it was a little intermittent before then, but not nearly so bad.

This is in Randburg BTW.

I have opened a ticket with Afrihost yesterday morning. Their "solution" was to enable roaming.
No feedback since.

This week I have been having some serious issues with my fixed LTE service from Rain, especially on Google products like YouTube and Gmail. Sometimes I can connect without any issues, then suddenly there is nothing happening. Even Google Sheets I use every day will work on one browser and not another. I am going insane.

Reporting this to Afrihost would be futile so I don't bother. Hopefully there are some people on here who can advise what we can do?

And Google keeps telling me I am offline. WTF is going on? Is this some kind of dark web BS that these tech giants are perpetuating agains the Huawei routers? I swear I have never seen this sort of behaviour online before. It makes zero sense to me.

we all need to do the same tests to see what we get.

I connected to the work VPN all traffic routed on that was working fine with the laptop
