Rain's 5G load-shedding issue

Many Rain 5G subscribers are complaining that the service goes down during load-shedding, leaving them with 4G access only.

While the 4G fallback works for many Rain 5G subscribers, others complained that the service becomes nearly unusable.

Oof, this would enrage me. ISPs have to ensure that all infrastructure is protected against load shedding. It's hard enough for most people to ensure that their routers are powered - making that irrelevant is not acceptable.

That said, Rain seems to work fine for me in PE during load shedding.

I bought a UPS for my modem only to find out the power at the exchange only lasts 70-90 minutes.

Is that on DSL? My Openserve fibre works perfectly fine as long as my router is powered. I know that nearby folks with DSL get zero throughput during load shedding.

Yup on DSL and them replacing the battery is highly unlikely, it is what it is at this point.

My issue with my 5G (this is only recently though) when the laodshedding happens, I still get ridiculous speeds (225mbps down and 60mbps up), but online games disconnect very often. I would rather have 25mbps 4G and a stable connection, then just high speeds.

Keep on selling that "fibre in the air", Rain.

It should switch over from 5g to 4g but it dose not always have to reboot the router.

5g tower is down then 4g dont work for me, But i take my capped Rain sim on 4g and it works fine please just fix these issues.

I have a Telkom Sim as well and never have to reboot it the router rain on the other hand.

Another issue is the lack of features on the 5g router so locked down.

This is very frustrating, but I simply can't expect a business with this type of infrastructure to fork out additional millions because our government can't get anything right. It becomes unsustainable in most business cases and at the end they will close down or the consumer will pay - once again, it becomes a secondary form of tax to keep "SEO's running".

I would be happy if they focus on the switching and stability to the 4G network so that I can still get workable speeds. Would be happy with a stable 20mbps.

Roos said the simple reason for not having battery and generator power backup to protect against load-shedding is the cost of the hardware.

“It would substantially increase the cost of providing the service, and given that we do have 4G backup in these areas, we believe this strategy achieves the best balance of ensuring connectivity at affordable cost,” Roos said.

*face palm* - I guess Rain is only for watching youtube and not for serious endeavours that require continuous connectivity.

Internet access is required 24/7.

If you want to offer that service, provide what is needed.
Their problem.
It ends up being your problem when they raise the price 10x. Funny how people complain over service but then don't want to fork out the dough to pay for it. Differing worlds, I would rather pay half price with fallback to 4G. The real issue here is that Eskom should get their shite in order so that batteries and expensive generators aren't even needed.

I stay in Hyde Park and for the past 7 days my service has been down , so is my neighbours . Not even 4G backup. What is worse about this frustration has been rains abhorrent service . They didn't even try . I logged a call everyday until I stopped .What a horrible service, what a horrible service offering

This is why I won't touch them. Specially on a 24 month contract. Used them on 4G. R1 000 p.m. Started nicely with 40 Mbps. After a few months under 2 . No reaction. No help. Fortunately that was a monthly contract.
