Following on from my thread here, I come to you now with questions about RAM timings...

I have CPU-Z running. I am wondering what when you hear of timings like 1.5-2-2-2, where I read off these figures exactly? And what they all mean.

Some googling has got me more confused than when I started :o

In CPU-Z the timings table has CAS latency, RAS to CAS, RAS precharge, tRAS and TRC as well as voltage....What does this all mean??

What Ram are you running? Those timings are insane. (fast) 1.5 is the volts that the ram uses.
The memory timings are given through a series of numbers, as, for instance 2-3-2-6-T1, 3-4-4-8 or 2-2-2-5. These numbers indicate the amount of clock cycles that it takes the memory to perform a certain operation. The smaller the number, the faster the memory is.

LOL. I just used those numbers as an example...

I was wondering what each one stood for. Like how to read the info off CPU-Z. Just reading down the 400MHZ column by me, my timings would be 5-5-5-16-21 @1.8V

I take it the lower the better then :p:o

Try setting your timings to at least 5-5-5-12 (through your bios). Your ram is running at 400mhz? Something wrong there (old ram?) Ram will always run at the older ram speed if you have an older stick of ram

Yep lower is better. Think of the timings as how fast the info stored in the ram is accessed and cycled.

Those are the names of each number in the normal list you see, i.e 5-5-5-10 would be CAS = 5, RAS to CAS = 5, tRAS = 5 etc.

They can use slightly different naming but it will almost always be in the same order. It's all just the latency or access times of the ram, lower is better. :D

I am running 2 x 2GB Transcend Jetram that i just got this weekend (It is DDR 2 800/5-5-5 according to the packet it came in.

The other 2 x 1GB are TeamElite Ram that I got a year ago...

Why is it running at 400mhz?

DDR2 6400 running at only 400Mhz!"

PC2-6400 (aka DDR2-800) is supposed to run at 400MHz. 800MHz is the "effective" speed due to double pumping. 400MHz frequency is what you should be looking for...or as close to it as possible.

The memory divider has to be a whole number, so with your CPU clocked at it's default settings, you will never get your RAM to run at exactly 400MHz. The best you will be able to do is 375MHz unless you change your CPU clock settings. For example, right now, your FSB:DRAM ratio is listed as CPU/12...in other words, 3000/12 = 250MHz. If the divder was 7.5, the RAM would run at 400MHz but since the 7.5 divisor is not possible, it would have to be 3000/8 = 375MHz.

So it is as it should be?

lol No clue. Must be the Team Elite Ram, take it out and check. My ram is running at 1ghz :D

Really? It says so in cpuz? What kind of ram is it? The team elite is also ddr800 though... I don't get it... Maybe i'll try swapping some out tomorrow and see what cpuz has to say.

Tomshardware has a whole thing about this. It says that DDR stands for dual data rate so DDR800 actually only runs at 400mhz whilst it is theoretically capable of running at 800mhz. It is odd that your ram is running at 1ghz. Is it not DDR? And have you overclocked it or tweaked the bios settings?

Yes.over clocking my whole system...hence the dark side welcome to you...once you start theres no turning back..

lol Yep. Whole system is overclocked, and CPU watercooled. Waiting for the GPU block.
I have 4*1GB DRR2 800Mhz Oc'd to 1066mhz :D
