Being new to X360 I must give some praise to the overall design of this mini-beast - It has successfully put off my desire to upgrade my aging PC. So long as I have my PC running Guild Wars well enough, my other gaming thirsts can be quenched by the console now... I can save for an HDTV now instead, the EDTV I have is ok, but I want more eye candy :D (Argh... Upgrading, its never ending, is it?)

Anyhow to the Q's: With regards to networking the XBox up to our home network: I stumbled on a personal oversight upon opening the box - 1 usb port, and we bought a second wired controller. I kinda dismissed it and thought I'd just run a wired network... However, being the lazy shyte that I am, I'd really like to go wired the more I think of it.

So - I have heard/seen that USB hubs work fine on the 360 but the tests were only done with extra wired controllers attached. I assume other supported USB devices would work ok too, not so?

I have also read that there are USB wireless network cards that work on the XBox. I haven't found a list as yet. My thinking is that if a normal product (around R300) works, why should I go and get the official MS wireless adaptor (+-R1k?)? I just want to know if anyone has gone this route and, if so, what specific make and model USB adaptor they used.

My other query is probably not one I'll get an answer to, so consider it a minor gripe. Their CDDB, is it a new, or inhouse database?

From my observation seems a mainly commercial database (which hints at it being new, IMO). I was quite excited about ripping as many of my most frequently listened to albums as possible, all of which have found their home next to the TV. This selection alone is about 100 CD's so its a rather well rounded finding. Out of those 100 discs I tried to rip, it found the track/album/artist names on about 30 of those discs... Granted, my music of choice isn't quite mainstream but on an app like Audiograbber (can't remember its CD database offhand), I have +90% success.

For now, I seem relegated to 'underground'/lesser known classics like At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul, etc etc on the XBox. I refuse to type in all the track names, let alone decipher some of more obscure ones, like the russian discs that lurk in my cd racks :) Rather unfortunate since some of the reason it was bought was for storing music. Ah well, mp3 discs seem to work a treat, so that'll keep me content for now.

Thats it for now. I'm so keen to fiddle more with this machine. So far, I am far more impressed than I ever thought I'd be with a console.

My 360 has 3 usb ports - one at back and two in front under the flap at the bottom. ;)

I've got mine networked wirelessly via a wireless AP using the ethernet port. Works great.

LMAO, I feel like a chop. I never even thought to look at the front :D Guess what I'm doing when I get home... Its a premium, so I am guessing that if yours has, mine should too.

I glanced at the manual one evening but saw no mention of the extra ports. Ah well. Thanks Bwana.

Both models have 3 USB ports, so dont fret, just look under the little flappy thingy migiggy :D

Man I am not even sure what this question means :D

Generally people use an ethernet cable to connect a hub/wireless adapter not USB. I have not found a USB adapter that works.

The official adapter is R850 from BT Games on the 23rd of March. Completely overpriced when you can just use a standard wireless AP instead.

No idea. But you can connect it to your PC running Media Center or Vista and stream everything from there. That might help....

If you install WMP 11 on your XP PC you can stream your music to your 360.

It's awesome to play your best tunes during Crackdown. :D

@Web: Hehe, good to know, thanks.

Now, what would be the best/cheapest way to connect wirelessly to the existing wired network, upstairs? I have rather limited experience with wireless stuff, so consider me a n00b here :)

Bleh, I knew I was beginning to waffle. What I meant was:
On PC's, I have seen certain USB devices work directly connected to the PC but refuse to work via a USB hub.

But the USB hub question has been obliterated due to me not fondling every curve of the sexy little machine. Had I been more sensual with it, I'd have found the 2 extra ports :D

Easiest way to connect...

I take it you don't have a wireless hub at the moment?

Buy a wireless hub and a wireless Access Point.
Connect the wireless hub and then setup the AP to bridge the network. Follow the wizard normally.

Once that is done plug the AP into your Xbox 360 and you are done.

Don't plug it into the 360 before getting the bridge to work though.

Yebo, we have absolutely no wireless equipment in the house at the mo, so I must start from scratch. Thanks for the advice Gavin!

Somewhere on this forum there is a document from Billion Routers on how to connect your Xbox to a network wirelessly...

If you can find that it should answer every question you have regarding networking.

Completely overpriced when you can just use a standard wireless AP instead.

I got one since it is small and slots snugly into the back of the console near the AV port since I don't have space on my desk for another brick of an AP with it's A/C adaptor.

It just looks better :).

Lol, that would be cool but sorry my question was meant to be more along the lines of how do I network that connection from my PC to the Xbox?

I've been looking around for hardware after Gavin's advice. Though, being a wireless n00b, I'd like some advice on what specific hardware is recommended. Hardware thats not going to break the bank but not hardware that'll go to Jesus after a week :p

Sooo, any advice? Its a wired ICS setup we have upstairs, no routers etc. Just a nice 3Com Superstack Switch and 2 PC's. I suspect my 3Com will be rendered useless by what I might need for this setup. Pity, it makes a nice printer stand :D
