Being 24, I would normally pay a lot - because those older than 25 drive better than those of under 25? pffft, please .. this morning is a perfect example that such a generalization is not true :p - but my mother was kind enough to work something out for me with ABSA so I'm only paying about R540 on insurance, and R130 on Netstar (which is apparently compulsory or something, lol).

Lmao!

All you have to do is get your folks to put the insurance (and I think the car too, I don't know what the catch is) on their name and put you as the Named Driver; it only works if you're under 25 of course; else you end up paying the same as everyone else.

If that's not the case, then I have no idea what my mum did, lmao. :p
 
My partner moved to my insurance and payed R540 on his 2007 polo comfortline..no netstar.....I am paying R400 on my Honda accord.

The bigger insurance companies charge a lot because their full of crap and believe their better. Personally, I think they're a load of **** and are less likely to pay out than the smaller ones.

This is an assumption of course.

I'm paying a grand for my 330d! You're getting ripped off. Or are you like 18 and have just gotten your license and already crashed 8 times?
 
I dont get the car thing...they all achieve the same thing. Get in, turn it on, drive to destination, get out. A R200 000 car does that just as well as a R500 000 car. And dont give me the speed, comfort rubbish. If you live in your car then it's maybe important that it has a butt warmer..otherwise...feh. Now diamonds...that's important :D

This doesn't apply to all cars, but you must also consider the research and development and safely designed into some cars. Safety features were definitely one of the major things I looked at when buying a car. And bear in mind that this costs more.

Tell me, which car would you rather be in when a taxi jumps a red light and t-bones your car on the driver's door when you are behind the wheel:
a). CitiGolf
b). Mercedes Benz C Class/BMW 3 Series, Volvo S60, Honda Accord (I could also put the same size car as the CitiGolf in here for comparison purposes such as a Clio, point is it still costs way more than a CitiGolf)

Yes, they both go from A to B, but when the worst case scenario does occur, which car would you rather be in?

Granted, some people buy Mercs, Audis and BMWs purely for the "status" they THINK it gives them, but not everyone is a superficial d00s.

I pay more for a car because I can afford to do so and because I want the extra safety stuff that comes with it, even though both go from A to B. In the same way I pay more for a 3 bedroom house when a 1 bedroom flat will suffice as a roof over my head, because I can afford to do so and because I want the extra "features" of the bigger place.

It all depends on your frame of reference.
 
Precisely Utternutter... same reason I bought my car...

I could have spent half of what I did and got a car that goes from A to B.. but I wouldn't have all the safety features.. and I have to admit, cruise control on the Merc is just such a nice thing.. i can breeze to work in such a nice and casual way.. :)

Take a drive when you're in Italy or France, Paris to be specific, you will come to the realisation that South African drivers are gods gift to mankind.

Oh..yeah I forgot about that place ("Bloody French!!" - Jezza). Then again, take a drive on a motorcycle in places like Cape Town or that horrible circle in Petoria to fully understand how bad some people drive. I haven't yet had the balls to tackle the N1 between the M1/N1 split and New Road offramp during rush hour on a bike. Just watching how drivers suddenly switch lanes whist in my car gets my blood boiling.
