Got a Vodafone E172 3G card, and on one specific machine, I keep on getting RAS Error Code 633 while trying to connect. Tried the uninstall, reboot, reinstall route, but it did not make a difference. It works fine on other PC's though.

Windows XP SP2.

Any ideas please?
Thanks.

Make sure the Telephone and Remote Access Connection Manager services are running. Do you get Failed to Create RasEntry?

Hi VD. Have read everything there already (which is basically just a link to the FAQ, which is just a link to Microsoft's website, which I already had a look at), and already tried Googling the problem, so this was my last resort, as the Vodacom shops just say "it's working on our PC, so it's your problem".

Slootvreter, checked those, both running. Tried restarting the services as well, which didn't make a difference.

Any other ideas?

Hi

Have you tried making a manual dial up connection without VMC and adding that AT string ?

Manual gives the same error. Please explain the AT string in more detail? What is it, and where do I put it in?
Tx

If the error is the same, then putting in the string wont make much of a difference to your current situation.

To set the string:

- Right Click My Computer
- Select Manage
- Click on Device Manager
- Expand the Modems block
- Right Click on the Modem you're using
- Select Properties
- Click on the Advanced Tab
- enter AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP", "internet"

What you can also do is open up msconfig and disable your whole startup to just the windows basics, then try again.

OK, the initialization commands under Advanced was empty, have put in that string, and it's still doing the same.

Also, have already tried the msconfig route, making no difference unfortunately.

I wonder if there's a app that can check COMM ports, to see if it's open or closed, and if open, which program has it open?? Gonna google that now...

Edit: Thanks for the help sofar!

This is what i want my app to do, but apparently Windows doesn't support that feature.

I think you can only list available COM ports, or all COM ports and their Status.

(but i refuse to believe that it cant be done)

If you try to run a application on a COM Port that already in use, the application should tell you that the COM port is already in use (i.e. open). A little crude but OK if you only need to check one or two ports!

You certainly can use MDMA with the command line /p (to force the COM port number to be tested) to do this.

Also worth keeping mind that some USB devices become virtual COM ports once the drivers have loaded, they "should" be listed in Device Manager - But I've found one or two USB devices that use a COM port and do not list in Ports as COM ports! Bluetooth devices often fall into this stable!

Microsoft have Portmon for free here: http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Portmon.zip This has logging facility and is quite stable.
